Sorry. Elric's sword in the series of Michael Moorcock novels. It's a kind
of demon, cast into sword form that's really powerful, but inflicts terrible
bloodlust on the user. Elric was the only person who could use it without
succumbing to it's influences, but even he had to walk a fine line, using as
much of it's power as he could without letting it control him. Pretty neat
encapsulation of a universal theme, IMHO.

Mind you, I'm no expert on these novels - haven;t read any of 'em for the
best part of a decade - so someone else might give a better answer <g>
