Our GM doesn't like to, but he has absolutely no problem with killing
all of us. He gives out a LOT of warnings and stuff. EX: "How long did
you guys say you were going to stick around...You remember where you
are...right? (oh yeah, Fort Lewis)

He has never played a mage before. The other shadowrun campaign that he
played evidently didn't have magic users of any sort. They switched
between AD&D and Shadowrun (time travel or somthing...)

We showed him the entry in the BBB on Elemental services and thier
stats...He still claimed not to understand them enough. I personally
think that he's underestimating thier powers...

This guy shouldn't be playing a mage. No offense, but if a player
doesn't take the time to learn the rules that govern his character,
or can't understand them, then he should play something else. If the
player likes magic, but can't understand the rules concerning
elementals, then he should play a sorcerer adept (spell caster only),
a shaman (easier conjuring rules) or a physad. If he isn't taking
the time to read the rules then try to change his philosophy about
that. If he still won't read the rules then he should be playing
something simple, or the GM and the other players should decide if
they want to take up the slack and help him out. If it's a really
bad case of not reading *and* not caring about the rules, then maybe
he shouldn't be playing a roleplaying game.

Anyway, take the time to talk to the guy and find out what he wants
before you and the group make any harsh decisions.

This is exactly what a player in my game is doing. He doesn't have
the books, and didn't bother to take my up on my offer to borrow
mine, so he knows very little about SR magic. He is an experience
RP'er, though, and wanted to play a mage, so we decided on a sorcerer
adept. And he loved using the difference in points between and adept
and a mage to buy force points and get more spells. He thinks he's
gained something. So everyone's happy.
