relevant to the list. THe first one I overheard at work concerning the
plight of Native Americans during the 40's and 50's. According to my
coworker, some of the richest deposits of uranium ore just happens to be
found in the southwest US on tribal reservations. One way or another the
government managed to get rights to mine this stuff, and to save costs
hired some of the local inhabitants to work the mines. Over time
radioactive silt has washed downstream and contaminated the shores where
(apparently) some people were still making mud-brick adobe type homes. As
I understand it, quite a few of those homes are dangerously radioactive
now and unsuitable for life. Considering the thread a while back
concerning the possible relationship between magic and radiation, I think
that might make an interesting tidbit to randomly throw out at the
players. Maybe our own government inadvertantly made the NA shamen
magically active before the rest of the world and triggered the breakup of
the USA. *shrugs*
The second idea came from an article in the USA Today about a new "smart
shirt" that has been developed by the military. Essentially this shirt
(which sells for $30US), consists of electrically conductive thread with
various microprocessors embedded in various locations. The shirt instantly
knows if a bullet has pierced the fabric, where it hit, how much damage
it caused, whether or not the wound is bleeding, whether the blood is from
an artery or vein, etc. It also monitors vital statistics such as
breathing, heart rate, and perspiration. A built-in transmitter sends the
data back to a medic station where they can keep track of who's injured
and who'se not. Also they have the grisly ability to ignore soldiers with
wounds too severe to save and can concentrate on those they can save.
There is also talk of using this shirt in the private sector for police
officers (similar combat situations) as well as for firefighters and
hospital patients in intensive care as a sophisticated biomonitor.
Bringing this back to SR, I remember a thread about using biomonitors on
corp guards to encourage runners not to leave corpses lying everywhere
whenever they go on a run.
I'm just tossing this stuff out among you sharks while I sit back and
watch the feeding frenzy. :)
