I'm looking on battlecorps and they've got the SR4 GM Screen up for
purchase, but yet I'm not seeing anything about it in srrpg.com nor has my
local store seen it yet.....

Has it actually been released or are they selling a pre-order for it?

It has been released as a PDF, but the print release is still waiting.

Ahh, that explains much......has anyone bought it yet?

(I ask because I'm wondering if it's something that is best purchased as
hardcopy or digital or if it's going to be so useful that it'll be worth
buying both, no offense to the people involved in putting it together, just
wanting to make the most of the cash I'm gonna drop on it since it looks
like prices are on the rise on them if it's going to be a $20 GM Screen)

It's stuck in Printer Hell; there will be more news about it ... when
we have some more news about it.

I wonder how useful a GM screen would be in PDF format. I know it will
have tables and whatnot on it, but PDFs don't screen very well.

When I buy the PDF format product, it will be to mine the tables etc. for
inclusion in campaign related documents. (I don't actually use screen, I
think the idea is kinda silly).

Well:

1) A lot of people just want the tables, in which case the screen is a
bit inconvenient.
2) Some of us have those "put in your own sheet" screens, for which
these are useful.
3) Others ducktape some cardboard together to make a screen, it's only
the tables that are difficult to get.

So it depends on what you want out of the screen.

If you can, could you elaborate a bit...
as far as the "sr3 to sr4 conversion guide" that's in it, is it just the
character conversion guide or is it stuff to be able to convert ALL of the
stuff that a character might have from sr3 to sr4 (custom gear or gear that
wasn't in the main book)

It's the character conversion guide that's currently available on the
website.

Is this the same printer problem as with BattleTech's Total Warfare?

No. Different printers, different sides of the world, different
problems. :-)

So is it not standard for companies to use the same printers? I notice Total
Warfare was produced overseas, while the release news for Street Magic says
that its being printed somewhere in the frozen tundra that's Canada (how
does the ink not freeze?) The printer for Total Warfare is also supposed to
be a new one that they're using for the first time.

Are all these printers simply an attempt for FanPro to find a decent one
with all the printer problems they've been happening, or do they simply shop
out to whoever happens to be giving them the best deal at the time?

It's pretty common for companies to use multiple printers -- some of
them are more affordable for certain types of projects, some do
better quality work than others depending on the type of project
[four colour vs. B&W / hardcover vs. softcover, etc], and of course,
geographical location influences shipping times.

One trend lately is for a company to print a big wonking colour book
overseas, and in in the 8-10 weeks it will take for it to arrive in
their warehouse, finish and print a smaller companion book
domestically, allowing them to release both at the same time, but not
forcing them to crunch and finish them at the same time. A recent
example of this is White Wolf's Exalted Second Edition, and the
Exalted Second Edition Storytellers Companion, released earlier this
year. The core book was printed overseas [I believe in China] and the
Companion in Canada.

The current BattleTech schedule is the same way ... Brush Wars was
finished after Total Warfare, but they should both be available at
GenCon, as Brush Wars is being printed domestically.

cheers,
Adam
