yes folks, I think it's finally official. Either that, or the email programs
of the world have come to a grinding halt on many fronts. The list traffic
has dropped back down to levels similar to "Holiday" and "Summer" that
I have
seen before...

So, what nice little topics should we come up for the hard core members???

With out a doubt it is summer, on Friday the temperature actually
reached 23 deg. C in Sheffield and before anyone says that that's not
hot this is the UK I'm talking about.

I think that the Teleport tread is doing fairly well.

and just one or two things that have been turning over in my head.

1: With regards to the BattleTech TCG that I'm just about to start
playing. I know this is OT but I'm curious and I don't know anyone else
that might know.

The Question is this am I right in thinking that With respect to the
BattleTech universe Humanity attained space flight in the 15th
century???

My reason behind my thoughts is this, in the intro to the BTTCG it says
<Quote>
For almost a thousand years, humans journeyed into the far reaches of
space, colonizing thousands of worlds and forming starspanning aliances.
From these grew the five vast star empires that make up the Inner
Sphere.
<snipped bit about Inner Sphere fighting>
From the 25th century onward, these walking tanks ruled the
battlefields.
</Quote>
this seems to say that the Inner Sphere emerged before or during the
25TH century at which time mankind had been in space for at least a
thousand years!

2: Back on Topic (well at least back on Shadowrun) could someone tell me
what the speed of sound is at sea level in SR speed. this one's because
I think I've designed a Motorbike that could excede it. I don't have
the stats here so you'll have to wait until after the Weekend until you
see them (assuming you want to that is )

:) Thanks for your endulgence.

That's not...

Oh, OK. Here in Ottawa, ON, Canada, we've had about a week of 25-30C
already... Definitely unseasonal.

About 300 m/s or 1000 km/h which in SR would be 1000/1.2 ~= 900

Yeah?
*whips out The Shop, fiddles for a moment*
OK:
"Shop v1.26"
"Fast Bike"
"Racing Cycle"
"Gasoline"
"ab"
"o"
0,0,0,0,0
153,"Speed Increase"
0,"Smart Materials"
7,"Engine Customization"
7,"Engine Customization: Speed"
6,"Nitrous Oxide Injectors"
1,"Increased Cargo Space"
4,"Turbocharging"

Cruising Speed of 543, Top Speed of 815, with Nitrous you can get 1358.

Not too shabby... :-)

You must have a Sun or HP or other big name box then... We had HP9000
servers at one place I worked and they took 30+ minutes to reboot.
Sick. My linux box boots in a couple of minutes.

No bike so far has done it. There was an attempt a few months ago to be the
first CAR to go over Mach1. IIRC the British team beat the US to the record
by about 3 days out on the Salt Flats. Even then it was pretty iffy whether
they could do it. And they were powered by jet turbines from the SR 71 I
think. There were definitely a few spectaular crashes, because handling
absolutely sucked.

I think the bike is a case where the rules say you can do it, but GM common
sense should limit it. Think how much force you have pushing against a bike
doing 150kmh. Now multiply by almost 7? The minute you tried to turn at
all, you would become a fine red paint on the pavement.

That does bring up at interesting point. I don't remember, but is there a
Handling penalty for getting up in the higher speeds? Seems there should
be, because of braking distance, turning radius, etc.

It's a pretty crazy thing to try.

I think that was the point of the original post... On the other hand,
take a look at all the other things that people can do in SR that are
basically impossible in RL. SR isn't realistic. Also, I've never
ridden a motorcycle, let alone at 150km/h, so I don't know how much
force there is - it would depend a great deal on how much of a profile
you're presenting to the wind, though.

Yeah, the GM should be giving the nutcase a penalty of something like
+24 for trying that... Anybody remember the house rule we came up
with for handling at various speeds?

IIRC, it's the "1000" speed listed as maximum for many things. Works out
about right in the end even.

i have a motorcycle and i have been 180km per hour on a flat stretch (i am
from canada) and believe me, there's no f***ing way i want to make any turn
at that speed unless it is a BIG, LONG curve of about a 20 degrees gradual
turn. anything else would be unthinkable unless i had a pro bike like the
rice rocket racers with high-tech leathers and 4 years of training!!!!

IMO, there should be handling penalties for high speeds on certain types of
vehicles, because i am an adrenaline junkie and i like going fast...but i
am not suicidal.

sure is fun though...hehe

This is easy: the speed of sound is 340 m/s or so; since SR turns are 3
seconds long, multiply by 3 (to 1,020) and you have the speed of sound in
SR vehicle speeds.
