Spoiler alert for Super Tuesday!

I ran the first 3 modules of the Super Tuesday run over the break, one of
which was my variant Casualties of War. I set that one in Downtown Denver
during a minor bug escape, but to which the response was hampered due to
international difficulties (ie no armed forced officially in Denver and far
too many "private security consultants" sitting on the borders of all zones
for comfort). It was interesting. One of my players was all ready to take
on an entire bug hive by himself (well, with as many of the team as was
willing to go along). He got a Karma for guts.

I recommend the adventure to you all, I thought the smaller runs were pretty
decent all in all. If the players were allowed a little leeway, then the
basic plotlines could become extended quite a bit. The only hole I found
was that upon leaving the containment zone, if the runners were getting out
via official means, then why does all their gear get confiscated? I solved
this buy modifying it so that they were getting out by less than legal means
(ie using the Generals contacts in the armed forces). The runners left most
of their heavy ordinance with the ghouls for safe keeping however.

The first run with the Toxic Shaman went off quite differently with my
runners than was expected. They got ahold of the canister quite early, and
kept ahold of it despite various visitations from Toxic spirits and other
more mundane forces. Finally Riv decided to "talk" to the runners, and
invited them over to his place. The runners foolishly accepted. So off
they went, tramping deep into the old Hawkeshorn (?) chemical plant to meet
Riv. Of course Riv was only there astrally, but plenty of his bad assed
troops were there to greet the runners. Things started off quite civilly,
with Riv offering 100,000 nuyen to the team if they'd just hand over the
canister and leave. I thought that since he was originally going to pay
"friend" some undisclosed amount, then he could at least attempt to buy the
thing off the runners. My team refused to part with the canister unless he
told them what the heck he wanted it for. So he did. Quite bluntly. They
were all silent for a little while after that. Then one of them pikes up
"You're a bad muther fucker, aren't you?". The player fully expected Riv to
go beserk at this, and that they'd then have to fight their way out, and
that Riv would thus not get the canister. Riv replied (in what has become a
bit of an (in)famous quote) "some would call me evil, yes". The runners
then decided to sell the canister to him (!). Half for the money, and half
because they were scared that if they didn't, then they'd never see the
outside of the Hawkeshorn chamical facility ever again. They then all went
home and ensured that none of their contacts were going to the rally. They
were all too scared of ratting on Riv, since Riv was doing what he was doing
for essentially revenge purposes, and they were (rightly) scared of what the
consequences of getting on his bad side might have been.

They then sat back and watched 60,000 people die on the Trideo.

Interesting run.

The run revolving around the key went off pretty much to plan, but the
runners almost managed to get their fixer killed off because they mentioned
to the elven dude that he "might" be holding the key secure for them.
Otherwise the run worked quite well, with the runners wondering just what
the heck was going on most of the time. Oh yeah, the first runner to make
contact with that fixer guy made the silly mistake of asking how much they
were getting paid for the run <grin>. Unfortunately (for the fixer guy),
the runners later got into contact with the IND magician who wanted the key
and found out the real amount. They almost ended up selling the thing to
Bellandona, since after the meeting where all the parties showed up, only
she and the runners walked away. They set up a meet for a couple of days
hence, and sold it to the IND magician in the meantime. Belladona will be
back in the future to get them for double crossing her. :-)

I would have liked to run the rest of the adventures, but time constraints
didn't allow it.

Does anyone have a synopsis of the adventures in Super Tuesday? The one
with Riv sounds interesting. I'd just like to know more about the
adventures to see if I want to pick up the book.

BTW, I posted a review/synopsis of Shadows of the Underground over on
ShadowGM a few days ago.

It's being posted to ShadowGM immediately after this!

Super Tuesday is a solid product. The runs are briefly sketched, but allow
for a wide array of power levels of PC's.
The runs alos give a great feel for the backgrounds of the various
Presidential candidates.
Overall, I give ST a solid B+ rating. The only reason you might not buy is
the fact that the election is officially over . . .

I am running the first part of that currently. The group does seem to be
enjoying it. It seems pretty diverse since there are several different
adventures in it. Plenty of magic, toxics, bugs, decking, etc. Although
I REALLY need someone to sit with me and show me how this VR2 decking
works. Our whole group is made of players that have never played SR2
before, and it is the one aspect that boggles us. I like it as the GM.
I am happy with it.

I had that problem myself, until I did this:

Randomly Generate a Green/Medium system. Someone posted a perl program
to the list that does this, or make on yourself.

Take the decker archetype.

Break into the system. Go through each step, as slowly as you need.
Repeat until you think you've got it.

Now that I think about, you might want to get the decker PC to sit down
with you and the book and see if you can work it out together. I
sometimes miss the obvious, and must be whapped upon the head for
foolishness.

The alternate solution is to not allow any PC deckers, and do it all with
NPC's. I did that at first (and many campaigns have a "no deckers"
rule).

What kind of reason is that? I bought ST over four months ago, and so far
I've only run one adventure out of it (mainly because I haven't played
much SR lately) but my campaign is way behind FASA's "official" timeline
anyway. In fact, I skipped an entire year to get it somewhat back on track
(without noticing it, I must add...)

One advantage of being behind official events is that you can see them
coming. For example, I'm not going to let the players know Dunkelzahn has
been killed. Not until my campaign's timeline reaches that point, anyway.

I'd think it also helps if you look at rules together, because both of you
will need to understand them if you want to run a matrix system in an
adventure.

I used to, after nearly throwing the VR1 book out of the window (although
things weren't *that* bad... yet). After several attempts at putting
decking into adventures, I gave up completely and didn't allow deckers
anymore. With VR 2.0, I've gone back and do allow deckers now, but none
have popped up so far.

I posted a huge huge huge review and plot summary to either this list or GM
a couple of weeks back. If you want my opinions, and an idea of what each
adventure involves, then either check the GM archives, or hope that someone
has saved it from RN. (Gurth sometimes saves all sorts of things.)

BTW, I've often wondered, Mark, would it be at all possible for the RN logs
to be saved for more than a couple of days? Perhaps someone with plenty of
space on their account (or who runs a system - hint hint Paolo :-)) could
donate the drive space? It'd be handy to be able to go back to older logs
sometimes, and there have been several requests for old information in the
last couple of months.

You're right, that's not a good reason not to buy the product. As I said,
it's a very good book, with lots to offer.
I wish I could keep my players from finding out info they shouldn't, but
unfortunately they have a nasty tendancy to grab every sourcebook that comes
along. Super Tuesday has been almost totally spoilled, and Threats has had
it's claws pulled. I working on rectifying this problem by modifying the
original material, but it does get old.

Actually, ALL of the RN logs from the beginning of it's
existence are available on ftp.itribe.net. Check
ftp://ftp.itribe.net/pub/listproc/shadowrn/ .. we've
even go the old HEARN logs.

You should talk to your players about this. If they are truely interested
in the game, and wish to derive the maximum benefit and enjoyment from
playing it, then they will quickly realise that their current actions will
be detrimental to this. Let them know that by reading all the available
source material they make your job as GM quite a lot more difficult.
Surprises and twists are some of the most enjoyable parts of the game, and
are all too easy to spoil. Tell them that as GM you would prefer it if you
were able to use the FASA provided plots and material, rather than expend
the large amount of effort to create your own original material that will
surprise and entertain them as much. Unless they're raving rabid munchkins,
they ought to see your point and oblige.

As GM I find that creating adventures that challenge and surprise the
players is quite a lot easier if the players do not have just about the same
degree of knowledge about the SR world as you do. And as a player I prefer
not to know that the plot my GM is using revolves around a particular piece
of information that I know all about. Even though such a circumstance may
give me (as a player) a temporary 'power trip', the satisfaction gained from
a truely surprising or original adventure is that much more when it _was_ a
truely surprising and original adventure.

Anyway, I would suggest that you speak to your players, let them know your
position and ask them to stop reading all the FASA material immediately it
comes out. It worked for me.

Cool! I didn't have any idea! I've always just sent off index commands to
the listproc, which has always returned the last week of logs at most to me
as available. Thanks heaps!

Most of my players are behaving themselves. It's just one or two that also
GM other groups on the side that have picked up more info than I would like.
Most of the time they don't use this info in character, but occaisonally, a
groan slips when I mention the Last Knight of the Crying Spire" or some
other thing that should go right over the PC's heads.
Thanks for the input, We're working on it!

First of all, tell them not to. If they ask "why not?!" tell them that it
spoils the adventures, because by reading the sourcebooks they'll know
what's going to happen. Then tell them they can read the sourcebooks after
you say they can; this way, they can read some books but not the ones you
plan on using. The "old news" books are also open to them. For example, if
you don't plan on ever having them go to Tir na nOg or having a campaign
that has anything to do with that place, the Tnn book is not off-limits to
them.

As for adventures, they would be a definite no-go area, at the very least
until you've run them. ST is mostly adventures with some source material
in between; if they want to read those bits, photocopy them (let them pay
for the copying costs if necessary, that might be an incentive for not
reading it with some people).
The same goes for Threats, because of the (rather dumb, IMHO) way in which
game world material is directly followed by GM stuff. It would have been
better to have all the GM info in the back of the book, I think.

I do save lots of stuff (about 3.5 MB of ShadowRN mails alone in the past
year...), but I can't find your review of ST. Strange, because usually I
keep book reviews. Maybe someone else has it?

Not to sound too harsh, but you really didn't know, did you? Most people
here knew that 3 months ago (some even earlier, I'm sure :)

Not many though i suspect, as there were no rumours about the
contents of Dunk's secrets, and the rumour list over say the
Compainion is kind of long [ok in this case a lot more can be said as
its not exactly secret but i didn't hear anything about Dunk till the
folks that made Gencon started mailing the list/the book came out -
and i read it :), which is well done to FASA on keeping something
that big under wraps, things sure do look like being interesting].

Sorry, making you feel stupid was NOT my intention...:) It just csught me
by surprise, seeing as how it hasn't been kept a secret since August, and we
have discussed this some in the past...

Hmmm... Good question, wish I could tell you...

Jack Koke might be able to tell you more, but since his book trilogy on the
D's assasination won't be out till next year, he can't talk...

FASAMike might be able to tell you, but once again, can he talk?

The rest of us can only speculate...

Rumors abound...

The only thing known is that something BIG blew the dragon up, and left a
nasty astral storm above the spot where it happened.

Also, Dunky left quite a bit of stuff to just about everyone and anyone in
Portfolio of a Dragon: Dunkelzahn's Secrets (Is that the right name?)...
Things like millions of nuyen to some, magical items to others, and other
interesting tidbits like a "signed portrait of Elvis aboard teh mothership":)

If the assasination has taken place finally, then your GM should allow you
to read D's Will, as this was made public knowledge following the
assasination...

Have fun, and sorry I can't answer your question directly... we're all
waiting to find out...

My money is on a secret co-op between Atzlan and the Horrors...:)
