Okay, let's change the question. I'm looking for
something that could give you a sustained energy boost
over a long (up to an hour or two) period of time, but
without the constant hyperactivity of the
Suprathyroid. Does anyone have any ideas for a new
item of bioware? :)

I forgot to add (although this may be self-evident
from my wording) - you should be able to activate and
deactivate it (preferably at will, but probably by
using some kind of drug).

I think just introducing glucose into the bloodstream (I think it needs
some kind of handler) will give you energy. You'll also need Extended
Volume because, IIRC, those sore muscles are caused from oxygen
deprevation.

I would treat that as a chemical gland but instead of charging for the
chemical, apply the suprathyroid's lifestyle increase.

.... Now what would trigger it? Same as Adrenal Pump?

Exertion and excitement, plus a certain drug to
manually trigger it? Sounds good to me. I don't think
you'd want to have it triggered by bursts of
excitement etc. though. I think extended periods of
exertion (5 minutes or more) would be a good trigger.
So if you're running away from someone, after 5
minutes, it kicks in and you start running faster and
can keep running longer. Man, I REALLY like
this...this is EXACTLY what I'm looking for. Thanks,
Al. :)

Any other comments on this?

When the Suprathyroid Gland originally came out in ShadowTech
I immediately dismissed it as a NPC only system. Great effects,
but who wants to die of old age at 30? (It's description
states that it increases the overall metabolic rate [read that
as also increasing aging rate, possibly greatly], unlike the
current edition which instead states that it increases metabolic
efficiency). So it rested for a few years, until I ran a
campaign which had a PC closely associated with a biotech firm,
a former company woman who still had some close ties. As she
would likely have access to Bioware throughout the campaign, I
wanted some room for improvement in Bioware, but cultured
bioware is specifically introduced at the same time as standard
bioware, so I bit the bullet and wrote up several new systems
and improvements on several existing systems (mostly variants
which made certain systems less suicidal to use). I introduced
a Restructured Suprathyroid Gland which only provided its
benefits while the character was active or excited (mostly
based on the presence of excess adrenaline in their system,
caffeine addicts beware, but I never tried to detail it's
exact chemical triggers, sure, adrenaline would activate it,
but so might other stuff). While the system is not really
needed in the current edition from the aging standpoint, it
would still be harder to detect unless active, would greatly
decrease the food requirements, and could certainly fill
the role you desire of it. It could easily be triggered
by a spray of some type or even a simple warm up routine with
some coffee afterwards...

Two comments. The price is probably out of line given that
it is no longer that much better than the standard StG, and
I have included the writeup of the original StG for comparison
purposes. If it is different from the current (or previous
for that matter) writeup, then the RStG should be modified
accordingly.

As far as the thyroid gland is concerned: this gland produces thyroxine
and calcitocin (of which the first is truly relevant to your question).
Thyroxine, produced under the influence of TSH (which is normally
produced by the pituitary gland, though apparently the suprathyroid
takes care of the increased TSH requirement all by itself), stimulates
and maintains cellular metabolic activities, which in turn means that
all chemical reactions within the body's cells are accelerated.
What you're looking for, though, is something that gives a "sudden
(temporary) boost", which in this case wouldn't truly be the case.

To be more precise: it's your body's cells respiring anaerobically (i.e:
without using oxygen, often caused by a lack of oxygen) which results in
lactic acid being produced. Muscle burn, then, is lactic acid heaping up
with abandon waiting to be processed by the liver (though most of the
time it's the day after that you feel it most). Anyway, increasing the
amount of glucose and oxygen available, as well as somehow enabling the
rest of your body to utilise all of that (hmm, perhaps that suprathyroid
is needed after all) could conceivably work.

Yeah, you'd need to "upgrade" other bits of body too, though it all
depends on the intensity of the boost: anyone can take a sugar rush
every now and then...

As drug inhalation and such isn't exactly the most erotic of things, I'd
say a mix between cyber and bioware would be the most effective thing:
simply add a voluntary cyberware trigger to a bioware gland (or go
all-cyber, in which case you'd have to refill every now and then :).

Well, seems you've already got your solution... I guess I just felt like
filling in some of the basic biological systems involved (the discussion
seemed to be progressing on a rather unscientific basis :-).

Okay, the question has to now be asked; why the desperate searching for
prostitute cyberware? (you don't want to know is an answer I would accept
:)).

Another possible solution for a bioware system to *smack* pump you up,
would be an adrenal storage system, or even an "Epi pen" tm. The
adrenal pump ups the amount of adrenaline at a certain time allowing you
to run faster jump higher etc. The Suprathyroid now increases and
maximizes metabolism, making you bigger, meaner, etc. A better solution
would be a way to maximize the amount of oxygen and glucose hitting the
muscles. this would up you big time, and allow you to be bigger ,meaner
etc. One way is modding the pituitary gland, the one respoosible for
growth, and boosting it to release growth hormones during strenuos
activity. The growth hormones make sure that muscles get fed more, and
recieve more oxygen so the cells can split. This would only require a
moderate amount of extra food, and could be used to make your body build
more during standard workouts. The epi pen tm, stands for a small
injection of epinepherin, a drug used to remove allergic reactions from
the body, stored in a needle that is avaiable over the counter. the
Epinepherin puts your body in overdrive for about 20 minutes, and then
crashes you pretty hard. Not to mention after an hour, you have to pee
pretty damn bad. I hope some of this helped, and please feel free for
suggestions/corrections, as I am pretty new at posting here.

The one and only game of Cyberpunk I played, my character got the full
conversion kit to become a Playbeing or whatever they're called. The
braindead sex machines that nobody will take seriously. His first night out
after the surgery, he mishandled a seduction (had to do a test drive), and
got kneed in the ovals. He kind of whimpered and said "Not the new
implants!"
You gotta respect a roleplaying game that will include a cyberpenis as
canon.

I believe this costs 80k in SR3. Could be wrong,
though.

Thanks, Charles (sorry, I can't call you CSR - that's
a company that makes sugar and sugar products over
here in Australia :) ). This is definitely one of the
possibilities I'm after (the other being a chem
gland-type thing).

I think you might want to reduce the cost (with the
standard model costing 80k (IIRC), I think twice that
(160k) would be enough for the on/off model). I'd also
suggest dropping the Bio Index cost somewhat - maybe
to 1.

The question is, for the knowledgeable among us, is
this "possible", or does it come back to the fact that
juicing the metabolism is a big change that can't
really be turned on and off quickly?

Hey, it's just the next generation of the crotch-mounted dual revolver that
the guy had in "From Dusk till Dawn".

Well, yes, that's why it's the WRONG image. :)

"Just call me...(cyber)Sex Machine."
-Tom Savini in "From Dusk Till Dawn", a local Pittsburgher.

I never knew he worked on "Bloodsucking Pharaohs in
Pittsburgh", until I checked IMDB. (FYI, this movie is the reason why
our version of SR Pittsburgh 2060 contains an Egyptian quarter, and is
sufficiently bad that it is hilarious.)

Hell no! That was a Robert Rodriguez film, despite any poor

They're both by Rodriguez. That's why they both have the crotch gun. ;)

It was in the guitar case. Salma Hayek picked it up and said, "I don't want
to know what this is for." (or something close to that). Could you imagine
the recoil penalties?

He has it in the guitar case. Selma Hayek picks it up in the book star and
says she doesn't want to know what it is. He says that its saved his life

Or, as he gets a bit older and tireder (is that a word?), he whips it out
and shoots big holes in his own foot because he didn't take his viagra.
Or when he leaves in a hurry he grabs the wrong one and all the bad guys get
is a bit worried as he thrusts his pelvis and yells "Bang Bang!", but
nothing else happens.

The Fembots designed to kill Austin Powers use similar, shall we say,
"tactics," though not with a dart gun.

This was a list.member (or rather her character). The character had very
large breasts (I think GG or HH or something obscene like that). They
were, IIRC, hollow and armored (either that or such a cybernetic
modification was proposed in the same thread.) and her nipples were
narcojet needles. I want to say it was Blaze, but I don't think that's
right ...
