Yup! Source books only cost about $20 a pop, and you don't need a whole
lot of them to play.

But table-top figs... well, lets see most cost on the order of $20-30 a
SQUAD!! and you need a few squads. Then of course there is the OTHER
side, and it can be sorta dull if you have to play with the exact same
forces every time you play, then if you buy them in "blister packs" (the
clear-plastic ones that hold between 1 and 5 figs) they run between $6
and $15... AND it's not too fun if you don't have atlease a FEW vehicles
to mix it up with ($20-30 apiece for decent sized ones) oh, and don't
forget the sceneary.. no fun playing on a flat, featureless surface
everytime. Model trees cost about a buck and a half APIECE, and prefab
buildings are a bunch more than that (yes you can make it yourself, -I've
done wonders with tin-cans, milk cartons and spare cardboard - which adds
things like paint, glue, carboard, wood, resin, clay etc.. to the
costs.)... And THEN you have to BUY SOURCE BOOKS!!

(prices are in the american dollar and based off what I remember seeing
last time we tried doing a game and I thought about buying some more of
the newer figs. - last year)

I on the other hand like to paint minuatures. Some of us artists use our
hands, some use our minds :-)
I basically echo your thoughts on tabletopping, although I do like to
tabletop ever so often. I think RPG's are funner, because you get a feel
for every character that you make/control, where as in Tabletopping:
" cmdr. Jones over here just plastered sir."
"Just replace him, we've got more where he came from."
War games are nifty, but just not enough feeling to pursue them
seriously.

Now using Gweedo the Killer Pimp ver. 3.1 sporting such features as:

That bit about the clay reminds me about another game that requires
modeling your own figures. Ever play claymation? I don't think it ever came out
as a real game, the only time I ever saw the rules was in an old Dragon
Magazine. Basically, you start with a tub of play-doh and make a monster, then
the monsters fight each other by smashing each other or with bits of doh that
the players throw at the other creatures. There aren't too many rules, just
enough to be interesting. When you're playing with friends, it is hilarious. Or
at least can be. Anyone else know what I'm talking about? I don't have the
issue of the Mag. so I don't know the actual rules, but have played a few
times. A wonderful distraction from RPing when you start to get burnt out.

Hmmm... do we harbor some repressed anger at the end of our
games?

If I didn't care what they looked like then I'd just as soon use some of
the hundreds of dice (OK, the Terminator Squad are the d20's #5-10, your
Marines are d6's... huh? Oh-No! is that the Commander or my Saving-Throw
die - I don't remember...) or use rocks or something, but part of it is
having something cool that represents your forces, and for me making clay
models of them everytime I play just doesn't do it...YMMV

~Tim (who's repsonce would be substantially different if you were of
sufficient modeling caliber so as to be one of those cool guys who gets
to design all the originals...are you?)

No, these are killer, death Mechs, not GI Joes.

Mix what? Colors? You can mix those things? whoa...

Hey is that a put down? Is 'cheap' an insult? I think I've been slurred!
AAAARRRRRGH!!! (Unless I wasn't being slurred, it's so hard to tell)

Not the END silly boy... During. like battle damage! using a pin to put
cannon hits on my guys, or rip an arm off if it gets blown off in the game.
or shred 'em up as their armor gets wasted. And then you can make
cool sound effects when it's happening.

Hmmm... you obviously have higher standards than I do. I applaud
that. Personally, I've never had the patience to do that kind of detail.

Nope I suck at modeling. I'm probably the worst sculptor that has ever
put hand to clay, but I have a lot of fun at it, and, I guess, that's why
I do it.

The best part of this whole notion is the option for playing ironman mini
wars!
When a unit gets destroyed, just break out the "Big Clown Hammer tm" and
let'em have it! :-)

From Arcane issue 16, page 79: "If the British army was to be equipped
with Games Workshop weapons then, with a defense budget of, say, £20
billion, we could just afford a squad of Gretchin, some green paint and a
pack of shield stickers."

I don't play any GW games (I own a second-hand copy of Warhammer Fantasy
Battle 3rd edition, though I've never used it), but I've heard enough
about the cost of their figures to know that I'd go for some cheaper
alternative. Also, I tend to go for realistic-looking figures instead of
what Citadel produces (there just isn't a gaming miniatures company that
comes close to Hornet's 1:35th scale figures, though :)

If anyone else out there has some of the battletech toys, we could
turn them into a playable game. Wouldn't be quite as cool looking at
the 40k scale epic battles are the huge Roborally games, but could be
fun.

Ral Parth sponsors "Cutthroat Battletech" IIRC, or maybe "Ironman BT?"

Something like that ...
