astral combat is alittle differentfrom normal combat, and is what the
astral mage would use to resist such attacks. He resists spell effects
as normal.

this physical-physical symmetry. In the bit on How spells work (p149 I
think) it says that a spell works by creating a bridge between Astral
and Normal space. If this is so then how does a Mana spell work on a
pure astral target. They have no physical componet in line of site.

Sorcery is the art of manipulating astral energy. That makes it a GOOD
way, IMO, to affect astral targets. Spellcasting requires “aura
synchronization”, and you CAN see the aura of an astrally projecting
mage (or a purely astral spirit or other being)

either astral combat, or a mana effecting abilty / spell.

Theres no “physical” involved in a mana spell- it dirrectly affects the
aura.
I think I can see your quandry- if you can target the aura of the astal
mage with a spell, why can’t he target the aura of a mundane or other
non- astrally active being, right?

The reason is, the mundane is not “active” on the astral plane. The
basic requirement is that both parties be active on the same plane
before they can interact magically.
An astral being and a mundane share no plane of activity. A percieving
or dual natured being and an astral entity DO, just as a pecieving or
dual natured being and a mundane do.
I think that is what is meantby the P-P S requirement.

I think “symetry” was just an overblown statement of restricting targets
to ones own plane of activity, stemming from the rather problem riddled
description of how spells work on physical targets
and behave in astral space.

SR3 will go to some lenghts to clean this up, according to FASA.
