In case you aren't aware of it yet, the new book by Steve Kenson, RN list
lurker and Mr. Magic, has just hit the stores.

Entitled "Technobabel," it is going to be the next "Burning Bright."
For
TK and Plot-D, I would recommend getting it and reading it, since it is the
novel that kicks off the whole corporate war plot thread that FASA is
giving us. I think it is dated a couple of months ahead of us (I saw one
thing dated in May 2059), so we should be able to bring Technobabel
elements into TK at about the same time (unlike Burning Bright and the Bug
City turn of events).

The basic gist, from what I could surmise, is that a Big-8 corporate war is
about to be kicked off. That's the sort of thing that will affect
everyone's PCs I think. TKers, get it.

Now, for more RN related things. First, kudos to you Steve. Like I said,
I've only read about the first 100 pages (though I did skip ahead to the
conversation between two old friends; loved it!) but it is turning out to
be an excellent read. While your writing style isn't flashy or distinct,
I've always enjoyed how well your words flow and the clarity of your
phrases. Very easy to read.

I'm practically only skimming the parts about Babel; truthfully, the whole
corporate intrigue bits, like the Corporate Court and such are outstanding.
I'm seriously diggin' on those chapters.

Now I suppose I should drop some spoilers for what little I've found out so
far and get the spoiler ball rolling. Remember, as usual, if you don't
want details about the book yet, move on to the next message.

That's enough. Okay, the basic story is that Fuchi brings Renraku up on
charges before the Corporate Court. Turns out that Renraku, with
Leonardo's help, has been smoking the competition as is now ranked third
behind Fuchi and SK. Fuchi, at least publicly, is blaming it on Miles Lanier.

Babel, the character who starts out with amnesia, appears to be a Renraku
sleeper agent, sent to infiltrate the otaku; Renraku believes that only the
otaku have the wetware to interface with Leonardo's optical decks. And
Renraku wants not only a bigger share of the Big-8 pie, they want the
entire pie. They are shooting for total domination.

For you space freaks, orbital factories are mentioned.

For you Fuchi employees and fans, it turns out that Miles Lanier is still
working for Richard Villiers. Big time, huge secret. Fuchi is also
playing a dominance game, but at a much smaller level it appears.

And as for the otaku...it seems that the current explanation is that the
otaku, through contact with the Deep Resonance, are essentially
reprogrammed. Their brain is rewired to be like a cyberdeck or something.
I don't think it's genetic, but it does appear to have something to do with
how the mind works, rewiring thoughts, not neurons. It's a bit odd and bit
early in the book though.

That's it for now.

Again, kudos to you Steve. I would have kept reading into the night if I
hadn't had to get up at 0'dark thirty to go to work. Hoping to get another
100 pages tonight.

Erik J.

"What was that popping sound?"

"A paradigm shifting without a clutch."
