Just a quick e-mail to see if I have this e-mailling list Thang
figured out.

Does anybody know if FASA has done anything official regarding
New Orleans?
Has anybody done anything unoffically?

I'm currently writing a way cool(IMHO), way unofficial module regarding
the lovely and always magical city of New Orleans. It should be finished
in a week or two. I`ve sent off for some touristy info and maps which
I'll have to adapt to the 21'st century. If people are interested I`ll
post the stuff that I have generated for the players to read regarding
the Big Easy

Challange Magazine did a five part description of the Big Easy. I belive
that FASA used their Vodoo fmagic rules in Awakenings, but I could be
wrong, as I don't actually _own_ that book yet.

Actually White Wolf did a five-part series on New Orleans: Shadowrun Style.
I happen to own all five copies of the magazines and Awakenings. The Voodoo
rules are similar enough to tell that they both use the word "Voodoo".
Awakenings is, of course MUCH more detailed. Whoever is writing the module,
I will gladly photocopy the articles, in exchange for a copy of the finished
module :)
Please email me privately.

As much as I'd love to see it, send it to swrdknght@***.com for Shadowland
Magazine. They could use the material.

Well, as everyone else has said, you can try the old White Wolf magazines.
But as a New Orleans native, I'd like to point out that THERE ARE NO
UNDERGROUND CAVERNS IN NEW ORLEANS. The entire city is below sea level
and pumps that impressed the Dutch were used to drain parts of the city.

I'm sorry to fly off the handle like this, but these little details bug me.

NO Trivia: we had above-ground graves for years because the ground was
too wet and the bodies would come floating up every time it flooded.
Nasty, eh?

Oh yeah. We don't speak french. Noone does. We're more like yankees
than Southerners. I'm quite proud of the way NO surrendered so quickly
in the Civil War.

Things to draw on for an SR campaign: in RL, we have a problem with
police corruption. Perhaps you've seen us on 60 Minutes?

NO landmarks: The Superdome (you can fit the Astrodome inside of it).
UNO. Tulane University. LSU and Tulane Medical schools. Audubon
Zoo. City Park (man-made lagoons, largest municipal park after Central
Park of NY). Mardi Gras. The French Quarter (actually has Spanish
Architecture, Jackson Square, Cafe du Monde, St. Louis Cathedral).
The Streetcar line (St. Charles line is the oldest continuously
operating line in the world (150 yrs in 1985), we rebuilt the
Riverfront line for the Republican convention in '88 and there's talk
of bringing more back). I-10 is the main highway.

Whew. I love that city. Too bad there's no way I could find a job
there and all the rest of my family is moving away as well. My parents
are going to buy some land and move about an hour away from Austin
(where my brother and I live) after my Dad retires from his job
as Budget Director for the City.

Dear Tim

Thanks for your post. I live in College Station TX (armpit of the universe).
I have been to N.O. several times now. I have only one question. What
kind of idiotic goob would say there are caverns in bayou-land? O.K.
I have two questions ... well maybe three.
1)What are the "Official Borders" of the French Quarter. I know that it goes
from Canal to Esplanade east/west but where is the Northern boundary?
The maps I have say that it ends at Rampart? Or does it go all the way
to the Louis Armstrong park?
2)Where specifically is the Irish Channel? My maps don't show it at all.

Well that about covers that for now. Many thanks for your help

Regards
Bill

The last family reunion I attended down there I was able to locate several NO
relatives who speak Creole French.

That's Chip Truth! Example #1: Traveling East on I-10, about 10pm local. My K-5
Blazer has a blow out in the left rear tire -- pull over to replace flat tire.
While changing tire, a truck load of rednecks pulls up behind and shoots up my
rig! (I had Florida plates at the time)
It's totally dissabled -- no tires, no fuel tank, no windows, the tailgate looks
like baby swiss cheese. Needless to say I'm stuck for 2hours after they drive
off, during which time 2 sheriff's patrols and 1 state patrol cruisers pass by --
didn't even slow down to look. Finally NO's finest show up and the comedy show
really starts up. They can't take the report, because the crime occurred on the
interstate it's out of their jurisdiction! Sheriff's patrol is Radioed for
assistance. They arrive (I've been here 3 hrs. & 45min.)only to tell me that they
are not allowed investigate crimes of this nature ... that's up to the state
boys. Call is made to the state patrol. 6:20am local time the state patrol shows
their pretty little faces -- Their excuse: It's within the city limits of NO,
therefore they are not allowed to investigate -- outside their jurisdiction don't
ya know. At 2pm (it's afternoon now) this pack of keystone cops decides to call
a tow truck for me and to atleast take a written statement from me for the
insurance company.

Two days later I'm back on the road again. BTW the insurance adjuster told me
that most crimes against property or other people are investigated and solved by
insurance investigators. (There's a job for a few runners.)

Example #2: My new wife and I are traveling along I-20, Just east of Shreaveport
(sp?), returning from our honeymoon. We get side swiped by a
tractor-trailer rig that tried to force us into a bridge abutment(sp?). Narrowly
missing the immoveable object, we attempted to follow the truck.
The poor taurus rental car can't keep up the pace and over heats, but we did find
out the truck is "Sterile" -- no tags, ID numbers, company name, nothing. We
pull into the next rest area with a phone and call 911 and are told the state
patrol will arrive shortly. 20min. later a sheriff's deputy arrives to see
what's up -- it's out of his jurisdiction, but he's bored and decides to stay.
After sitting around for another 15min he hears the dispatcher give the call to a
state trooper. Almost immediately someone else, Identifying themselves as the
Governor's Office, ordered them to take a coffee break before responding. The
deputy through a fit at the state boys and succeeded in having the borders sealed
-- too late no sign of the rig after 3 hours. Is it any wonder my ancestors
consider Louisiana, and The Big Easy in particular, to have been a smuggler's
paradise?

Can't argue with your first hand experience, but it's still
not very common. Stereotypically, the French speakers
will be the Acadians (came from Canada) who live away from
New Orleans and are what most might consider Cajun. In urban
regions, you'd have the upper-class whites trying to preserve
the old ways. Most of those are trying to preserve the old ways
outside the city limits, since white flight is a fact of NO life.

NO proper is >65% black today, but I couldn't really say much
about the metropolitan area, in general. In suburban eastern
NO, where I grew up, grade school was about 50/50 and middle
school was close to even numbers of white, black and vietnamese,
probably the next largest ethnic group in the area. Comparing
my own memories to those of my brother, who was three years ahead
of me and went to all the same schools, the number of whites
was clearly dwindling.

In years gone by, the racism in NO was against the recent immigrants
(Italian, Irish, esp.), but given my own ancestry, I'd like to
think that if those prejudices could be overcome, then so can today's.
