Do any of you play/have interest in playing text-based MUDs?

How about one set in/coded specifically for Shadowrun?

I am interested in finding out if there is any player base for such a game.
And, before anyone asks, I have played the Denver-based MUD that was linked
in the SR Archive. Great players, wonderful GMs; lousy attitude on the part
of the creaters, really lousy code and mechanics. So I am talking about an
improvement on what was attempted there.

While you all prepare to send feedback, I will be over here spraying fire
retardent chemicals on myself. :)

Oh, be still my heart. Someone who doesn't know what a MUD is.. :) How
delightful. :)

MUDs are Multi-User Dungeons (Dimensions, depending), which (I'm using the
over-general brush here) are hack-and-slash, whose only purpose is to gain
as many levels and powers as possible to become "Heros" or
"Immortals",
which gives more powers (making the character an effective demi-god).

There are others which are more RP based, such as MUSH, MUX, MOO, and other
MU* variations.

Ever lovable and always scrappy,

Well, I don't know about Shadowrun Denver, but when I applied to play on
Shadowrun Seattle MUX, I finally gave up in disgust after they turned down a
5 page single spaced Background that addressed every one of the 20 Questions
in detail. I've been Role Playing for over 20 years, and thought that they
were a little bit excessive.

Agreed there. I've tried on seperate occassions with different
characters, but each time I was rejected because they didn't like the
premise. Yea, I answered all 20 questions, but they apparently didn't
like the answers that *fit* my character concept. Oh well.

The over general brush...ummm, yea. :)
I have avoided most MUDs (Multi-Uer Dungeons), and thus avoided whatever
experience prompted that description. I can only assume you played MUDs
based on AD&D...a system that has been mocked before on this list...and
rightly so. An SR MUD would obviously need a different approach.

I am talking about a system combining the combat of a MUD with the RP
emphasis of other MU* games. Our intent is to recreate the table top game
as closely as the code will allow. That means social skills and roleplaying
bring as much for character advancement as combat.

"You can have any character we want you to play...", or something. :P

I have had similar experiences with the Seattle MUX, and I had been invited
to play by another long time player of the MUX. Go figure. As I said, we
are talking about blending and improving the concepts of MUD and MUX/MUSH.
Characters would not be rejected on concept. There would not even be an
approval process to weigh the merits of someone's idea. We are writing
custom code, instead of using old fantasy MUD code; and we are looking for
the blend of roleplaying and conflict inherent in SR. Equal karma for equal
deeds. Absolutely NO karma based on number of kills. :) An hour of good
roleplaying should be as valid as an hour of slogging through sewers
depleting the devil rat population. My only question is: If we build it,
will they come?

I'd be there, but I couldn't help with the construction. I am currently in
the process of building my own MUSH (original theme) which is taking up far
too much of my time...

People only mock systems they don't like. I personally love the 2nd edition
AD&D system and loathe the 3rd ed. All a matter of tastes. Most MUDs I've
played have been based on original world concepts more than any "known"
system...and they in general have sucked.

The thing you'll want to emulate then is close to Vampire the Masquerade
then. Basically the modrators would have the ability to create
objects/enemies in certain locations on the fly (to create runs for users).
The world however would also have more general locations for runners to do
stuff in when they're not on runs or want to do things themselves (my old
group tended to knock over banks quite a bit)

Absolutely NO karma based on number of kills. :) An hour of good

If it was built I'd definately drop in...if my telenet client would let me.

I'd be willing to check out, however I have too many irons in the fire
atm so I couldn't dedicate too much time to it. :/
