I can't be sure, so don't take this as gospel.
At some point (I can't remember when) Strain 3(?) FAT bacteria were released
into the containment zone. The bacteria eats into astral beings, so the
dual-natured bug spirits got their rear ends kicked, unfortunately so did
the dual natured ghouls.
However I believe that some ghouls survived so...
