I reread a part of Clockwork Asylum (Chapter 36) by Jak Koke which delves
into the Crash of '29. I'll put some spoiler space before I summarize what
it said for those of you who are reading the book at the moment.

Thomas Roxborough (one of the major stockholders of Aztechnology) used to be
the CEO of a small corporation called Acquisition Technologies. He had a
really good programming department headed by a man named David Gavilan.
Dunkelzahn was planning to convince David Gavilan to come and work for a
corporation owned by the Wyrm called Gossamer Threads.

Thomas Roxborough found out about this and it started a small data war. He
instructed his programming department to start working on the deadliest,
nastiest computer virus they could come up with. His whole department worked
on it, including David Gavilan. It became a cutting edge piece of
technology. His intention was to destroy the data core of Gossamer Threads,
nothing more.

They wanted to try it out on a small corporation first, Effexx Studios and
it destroyed them completely. At first they were overjoyed, but then
something happened. It was a complicated program, self-replicating,
self-correcting. It got out into the old internet and infected hundreds of
computer networks.

Dunkelzahn met with David Gavilan to discuss his transfer to Gossamer
Threads. Dunkelzahn read in his mind what he had done with the virus and
convinced him to quite Acquisition Technologies and work for the UCAS
government to fight the virus.

Major David Gavilan headed the Echo Mirage team and fought the rapidly
expanding, growing, strengthening virus. The team was funded by many
corporations, including those owned by Thomas Roxborough and Dunkelzahn.
Gavilan, (who had already invested lots of money in Ares Macrotechnology
through a corporation called Gavilan Ventures) lost a lot of friends and
came under the scrutiny of the media after fighting the virus.

He lost a team member named Alice Haeffner, the wife of his very good friend
Kyle Haeffner. He did everything he could to keep her alive but what Kyle
and David both didn't know that Alice's spirit was living on in the Matrix
as an AI named Alice. She has been looking for the one who started the virus
ever since.

Major David Gavilan decided to disappear and he started a new life as Damien
Knight. Damien, with the help of all the cutting edge of technology created
to defeat the crash virus and his knowledge of corporate raiding, planned
and executed the Nano-Second Buyout we all know and love. Dunkelzahn funded
and helped execute this plan, while he secretly started buying out Gavilan
Ventures.

The reason why Dunkelzahn did this is still unsure. Some people think he
felt guilty for helping to create the crash virus and helped destroy the
life David Gavilan had, and some people think Damien Knight was blackmailing
him with the involvement in the crash-virus. All those people who don't
think Damien Knight wasn't intelligent enough to blackmail the Wyrm must
remember that DK and the Wyrm had an ongoing chess match that the Wyrm
didn't always win. He had the Wyrm's respect.

When all the dust settled Damien Knight had an equally big share of Ares in
possession as it's former CEO Leonard Aurelius (22%), while Gavilan Ventures
(thus Dunkelzahn) held 12% of Ares stock. That 12% was always the key stock
that was used in the decisions made within Ares because Damien Knight and
Leonard Aurelius were always pitted against eachother. Dunkelzahn managed to
manipulate both of them rather nicely with those 12%.

Later on, when Dunkelzahn died while being president, Damien Knight
maneuvered his, still good friend Kyle Haeffner into the big seat. Kyle had
become a lackey due to gratitude for what Damien tried to do for his wife
Alice Haeffner when she flatlined while trying to fight the virus.

I don't know if I left out anything,...or if I made some mistakes here and
there. If someone knows,...please inform me and any interested people on the
list.

Just my 2¥,...
