I've always seen lifestyle prices as generalizations to make the game go
easier, so your players actually have to spend money for food, clothing,
and an apartment, without having to spend a huge amount of time
house-hunting and gong shopping. Likely, the bachelor who makes $50,000 a
year does live what he considers a middle lifestyle, but his car is a
couple years older and he eats a bit more Nutria-Soy than natural food.
Still a middle lifestyle, but not quite what was described.

I was talking to a couple of engineer relatives who both make about $50k a
year and they both felt they were middle class. Even with both incoms
together, they felt they were still only up at the top of the middle income
backet. And Personally, I earn less than $12,000 a year and I would qualify
myself as "low" lifestyle.....

This is insane. I live pretty well off of around $30k a year. I can't even
imagine a 66% increase in my income. I own a fairly nice car (well, a loan
on it. :). I live in a moderately nice apartment. I eat out most of the
time, I splurge on things that I don't need once in a while. I have a pretty
expensive computer, etc. I have probably a tad more debt than I'd prefer,
but that's mostly my fault, not my salary. $50,000 is hardly low middle
lifestyle.

In fact, if I made those wages, I'd probably be free of most of my debt and
on my way to buying a house.

It does depend a great deal on where you live. I'm guessing you're
not in California. Here in Atlanta, I'm paying $650/month for a two-bedroom
townhouse (decent on the inside, but in an upper-lower class pocket on the
edge of an upper-middle/lower-upper class district). Folks in CA tell me the
same would cost over twice as much in the Bay area.

I can get an apartment for half that here in Fall River. But in Boston,
it would be more than twice that. It does depend where you live. Where I
am, my parents make about 35K a year (american), and we're middle-middle
class, AFAIK.
BTW, if I go back to Atlanta sometime when I'm NOT stuck on a layover
gone horribly wrong, can I come visit you? :P I WOULD like to get back
to Atlanta. Seemed like a nice place.

Fall River, I feel Sorry for you. Of course growing up and living in in
Lowell till 3 months ago I guess I shouldn't talk :).
