I was sent this a few days ago, same old crap just a different decade.

No doubt left overs from the 1993 FBI stuff.

LARPers scare people.

A someone who both plays RPGs and holds a security clearance, I
think it's crap. But hey, anything that causes a foreign armed service
to weed out intelligent, creative people from key positions is fine by
me.

Especially as roleplaying is a part of military assessment centers and

I've never quite figured this out, so here's as good a place to ask as
any:

Is airsoft a form of larp? paintball?

LARPing involves moving table-top rpg heroics to Live Action - so if
you are just screwing around the army will still take you. Keep a
character sheet and have GMs on the field, and prepare to get demoted.

I'd say it usually isn't (but it's a thin line), because if you play
paintball you're not really doing the kind of adventure/scenario/mission
that RPGs tend to: the scenario is mostly just combat, nothing else.

However, you could probably quite easily play something like a
modern-day military or investigating LARP using paintball or airsoft
weapons -- in which you'd have some kind of mission to perform, which
may or may not result in combat (but knowing players and RPGs in
general, it probably will :)

You have airsofters with automatic weapons and you believe we *won't*
find an excuse to start shooting? :)

I was more thinking of the way PG adventures generally run[1], but yeah,
you're right :)

[1] Not too long ago, my players were complaining that their SR
adventures usually end up in a firefight even when they try to avoid
them. I drew a parallel to action/war movies: if the good guys in those
would get into and out of the bad guys' lair undetected but still
accomplish what they set out to do, you'd feel it was a lame movie...

It depends how you play, in the UK we have N-E-X-U-S (which is LRP with
airsoft guns instead of rubber swords... although they do allow the use of
rubber swords too) and airsoft which is more like paintball - and
variations on the theme between the two extremes.
The BIG airsoft event this year is Distant Thunder, hard core MilSim but
run by a commitee which includes folk who used to organise the Lorien Trust
events, its CivPop rules lend themselves beautifully to LRP scenarios and I
know that we're going to be playing chunks of it less like soldiers and
more like Shadowrunners.

Yes, I know...
It's sad isn't it :D

Never in my experience...

Well, in that case, I would probably be the sort of player to park an LP gas
tanker in front of the objective and then summon 6 x force six fire
elementals.....

Either that, or crawl through the sewers (wearing military grade armour with
the enviromental sealing and breathing filters) and plant a large quantity
of commercial grade explosives near where the crappers empty into it - I
would hate to be the wage slave taking a few private moments to relax and
read a newsfax printout.

I didn't mean to suggest firefights in SR should have huge
Hollywood-style explosions :) Only that firefights are a given in games
like SR, even if it's for no other reason than the fact that everyone
carries weapons around most of the time.

I think it would be good to have them succeed at avoiding a firefight
once in a while and see what their reaction is. It probably would be
boring if there was never any combat, but when player really want a
fight they're pretty good at starting one for themselves :).

Oh, certainly. If they do well, they'll avoid the fights they don't want
to. But if they screw up, they'll often have a firefight to try and get
out of :)

> It probably would be
> boring if there was never any combat, but when player really want a

Heh, I had fun with that last session. One player seems to have gotten
the idea that his character thinks problems can be solved with violence
(I'm pretty sure he's role-playing it, anyway... :) We've just reached
September 2061, so SURGE hit on Sunday; the group's magician, who
happens to own a lore store, decided this was a good time to start
selling "anti-SURGE ointments" and managed to persuade one of the other
PCs to walk around outside wearing one of those sandwich-style
advertisement boards.

Then some guys show up and throw a brick through the store's window.
Sandwich man walks over to them and asks what they think they're doing.
They reply with "Piss off". He draws his Predator 3 and shoots one
through the head -- nine successes, so the brick thrower does a JFK. The
other three run away, and sandwich man gives his pistol to the magician
to hide behind the counter. He then calls an ambulance for the guy he
just shot. (He acted as if this made sense to him, but don't ask me...)

While he's talking to the ambulance crew, the three buddies show up
again and shoot at him with a shotgun and SMGs, leaving him with a
Moderate wound. Sandwich man decides to run into the store, knocking the
magician out of the doorway (where she to see what the gunshots were
about). He then says "I jump over the counter", leading to immediate
giggles from several of the players, because they _hadn't_ forgotten he
was wearing the advertisement board :)

Needless to say, his Athletics test didn't roll well enough to prevent
him from ending up upside-down behind the counter inside the boards, but
he managed to get out while the bad guys were shooting up the store. He
then proceeded to shoot all three of them. (The magician had tried to
Ball Lightning them but 1: failed to roll any successes, and 2: passed
out from the Drain. This is also entirely typical behavior for that
player regardless of the character she plays...)

Sandwich man then went on to run a little protection racket for the
other stores in the neighborhood for a day or so, until he wisely
decided not to press the issue when the Mafia politely came and asked
him to stop.

Actually, a well planned and executed plan that avoids getting into the
firefight and you still manage to accomplish the task can be very
rewarding in and of itself sometimes. Especially if it requires a high
level of skill, some luck and a lot of spot on team work.
