The trick is that trying to level the earth or something even as remotely
"colorful" would
cause everyone who witnesses it to belive "this can't be happening." Even
though their powers are almost insignificant compared to Neo, get enough people
witnessing it and the whole effect would be reversed.

But if that theory is right, Neo is in for a nasty fall just as the credits
start rolling...

Heh, sounds like "Mage". Good example.

:Yes but....SOLIENT GREEN IS MADE OF PEOPLE!

Soylet grean was only a part of the food supply, and was proably not
mostly people.

:Is Solient Green a piece of Tripe as well? :)

Naw, its a piece of camp. :)
The food problem in the matrix is so indiotic, because making any type
of food for humans and keeping them alive to get energy from them is a waste
of power that could otherwise be used more efficiently by the machines-
people, like every other chemical or mechanical system, do not produce an
energy suplus, and will always consume more usable power than they produce.

:Ok,
: I may be confused about this (I've only seen the movie once), but I
:thought Morpheus was talking about the robots using a human beings NEURAL
:energy as a power source. This would explain two things in the movie. 1)
:Why there wasn't complute muscle degeneration (some nerves were firing) and
:2) Why he had all of the connections to his body that were unnesacary for
:accessing the matrix (since they were all surgicly removed by Morpheuses
:crew). Any thoughts?
:
:Mockingbird

They were- he mentions the human nervous sytem produces as much energy
as a 600 volt battery. [A volt isn't a measure of energy, but Heck,
Morpheus is just a naval capatain talking to a super hacker- why should he
use the propper technical term?]
Still, unless the machines need something else from the human brain or
opther compnants that is IMPOSSIBLE to produce otherwise (a stretch, given
thier other technologies), its an awfully innefeccient way to produce
energy. Want elecricity? Fine, burn the humans and thier food, and use a
themocouple, or even a turbine generator. Much more effecient. The
RECOVERABLE energy output of a human being is patehtically low- even if it
were a good way to turn fuel (food) into electricity, you can't use all the
nueral power, without blocking nueral signals!
A cool theme they did not seem to be using was that the AI's might be
"parasitic intellegences"- they might have to use human minds to mantian
thier sentience somehow, lacking "souls" of thier own (or simply being
unable to imitate the brains computing power / methods). There are some
cool scientific / mathmatic / philosophic concepts here they could really
butcher, but the wiz-bang visual of rescuing a human and watching a machine
fall would have worked pretty good. Did somebody say "sequeil"?

:Nope. Morpheus said something like "The human body produces
:over X thousand BTUs..." (BTU stands for British Thermal Units,
:AFAICR). In any case, it's a measure of heat production, not
:electrical.

I was doing rehab and decorative construction for a bar once, and they
were having a HUGE air conditioning unit installed. I asked why thay had no
similar sized heaters, and they said it was because a human produces ~800
BTU siting still, and twice that when active (IE, dancing, as this bar would
have had more than 200 people doing, with any luck). A normal house uses a
heater with an output around 150k btu, iirc.
Make of that what you will, but rememebr, the human body sits steady at
98.6 degrees; extractable enrgy depends on DIFFERENCE in temprature, not
just heat output.

And yes, there was also the supposed use of neural electric energy.
Hey, if the writers are gonna smoke crack, they might as well light up a big
rock.

I was wondering about that myself. Given that the human brain is
*very* redundant and doesn't operate at full capacity, the AIs could be
harnessing that extra capacity. They could go through the *major*
hastle of growing just brains and building high-tech machines to keep
them alife, or breed humans and keep them captive in a virtual world.
I'd go the breeding route.

Also, in the movie the MIBs were parasitic. Notice that they
maintained their presence by taking over people's "icons". The
characters were able to kill their hosts, but the MIBs just moved to a
new host. Also at the end there the one MIB was able to view through
the eyes of a bum in the subway station, implying a symbiosis, or
ability to use the bum's icon remotely.

Maybe by using human minds as hosts allows the AIs to be something more
than they can be with just silicon and electricity.

Maybe the energy crisis story was just propoganda that the AIs fed to
the people of Zion. Using mankind as a battery isn't a pretty picture
(BTW, the whole harvesting scene could have been the character's
imagination) and would certainly motivate Zion. But if the people of
Zion knew the real reason, that humans were being used as hosts for
parasitic AIs, the revolution could really kick into high gear.

Redundant, perhaps. It's always been my understanding that it has the
capability for different regions of the brain taking over functions from
other regions that are underdeveloped or damaged. (But that's just my
uninformed memory of perhaps a scattered article somewhere).

BUT! I thought that the whole "doesn't operate at full capacity" idea had
pretty much been refuted?

http://www.urbanlegends.com/science/10_percent_of_brain.html

The basics go that evolutionary theory and clinical evidence do not
support the idea that a significant portion of the brain goes unused.

Were the machines using the humans to produce energy or to STORE the
energy produced by some sort of fusion?
