Just this week, I got my copy of White Wolf Games' Limited Edition
printing of the new version of the core rulebook for their flagship
game line, Vampire: the Masquerade. Compared to the new version of
Shadowrun, it seems a bit lacking.

The Limited Edition of Vampire: the Masquerade Revised Second Edition
is similar to the Limited Edition of Shadowrun Third Edition in many
respects. Both sport black leatherette hardcovers with inlaid foil
stamping. WW 2299 does also include silver foil gilded page edges, a
red cloth bookmark stitched straight into the binding, and a slipcase
that also includes a small art portfolio book, also bound in black
leatherette hardcover, features that FASA 7000 did not include.

Content-wise, however, the new edition of Vampire adds only minor
changes to the game, compared to the plethora of changes to be found
in SR3. I think this stems from the fact that while FASA wanted to
overhaul and update SR, White Wolf merely wanted to smooth over a few
rough spots, and revise Vamp up to the quality found in the later
written World of Darkness second editions.

However, because of the lower ammounts of "new stuff" in the new
Vampire, it was a much less satisfying purchase than Shadowrun 3rd
was. Even if one opts for the cheaper unlimited printing of Vampire
Revised 2nd, it's still a $30 core rulebook. I ended up feeling let
down that I had spent that kind of money on a book with only a little
bit of "new stuff" in it.

All in all, I think FASA wins this one.

(with this, I'm going to set myself nomail for a bit, since I need to
start getting ready for my upcoming vacation. Be back in two and a
half weeks)

Well, be fair. Vampire needed a lot less work than SR2 did. Only fix what's
broken. Vampire doesn't need (nor does it possess) SR's complexity, and most
of its mechanics pretty much worked. I've never seen a Vampire FAQ, but I'd
bet that it isn't nearly as long as the ShadowFAQ is.

Somehow I imagine it would read like a bad collection of beatnick
poetry mixed to a Kurt Cobain album with praise of the "great visionary"
Jeffery Dalmer and his work in recreating the vampiric lifestyle (find
beautiful young boys and eat them whilst lamenting your sorrows).

Questions about which shade of black goes well with other shades. And
when it's ok to add red to your shirts.

:)

Ok, so I don't exactly relate to Vampire.

Actually it seems you relate Vampire to the "goth" style. While it may have a
certain element to it because of the opinions of some of the designers. They
have gone away from it a lot. I dislike the whole "angst wannabe" part of it,
but I enjoy Vampire the Dark Ages.
