Has there been any mention anywhere of what happened to the UN (united
nations) in SR times...does it still exist? does it have any clout still?
did it go belly up in the 30's? whatever...throw me a line here ;)

Sorry it took so long to get an answer but I've been away on me hols, yay!
Anyway, the UN hasn't really been covered in the shadowrun world. The only
canon mention I've read, which I can't remember where from at the momoent,
is that the massive earthquake that flattened New York in 2005 gave the UN
the excuse they were looking for to move their HQ to Switzerland, they'd
wanted to get oit of the US but couldn't without a good excuse and that was
it.

Personally I think that it's be even more of an ineffective taling shop than
it is even today. In the 2050'2060's most countries are having to really
work to just survive themselves. They wont bother with aid or peacekeeping
missions.

I mean, look at the Permanent Security Council members in the 2060's. China
has disintegrated into numerous warlord fiefdoms and ceased to exist as a
coherent nation state. Russia has gone back to a quasi-communist
authoritarian/militarist government and is back to a Cold War footing after
the EuroWars parts I & II. Plus they're in a military stalemate with the
breakway Yakut nation in Siberia. The US has become the UCAS and lost a lot
of its land and power. The only two relatively unscathed members are the UK
and France.

I also read a few weeks back that there had been a serious proposal at the
UN to give Germany and Japan permanent seats on the Security Council due to
their economic clout nowadays. If that went ahead Germany has fragmented by
the 2050's and Japan seat would be defacto controlled by the Japanese Mega's
so that's another spanner in the works.

Hhmmm. Another question that came to me just now was that AA and AAA Mega's
are considered extra-territorial (sp?) andindependent sovreign nations.
Would that mean they'd be members of the UN alond with the rest of the
nation states? Or would they just concentrate on the Corporate Court which
is much more powerful than the UN in the shadowrun world?
