Well, I'm finally starting up my Aztlan/Yucatan rebellion campaign tonight.
So if I'm looking to throw a few norm and Awakened critters at them, what
types of beasties would be common in that area? I know a large amount of
that area can be dense jungle/wooded, but with the poor organization in the
Critters book, I haven't found much that specifically mentions being common
in that area.

The Aztlan sourcebook has several suggestions in the back. They are
mostly just variations on 'normal' Critters from other parts of the world.
Sorry I can't tell you about any of them, terrible memory. The only
one I can remember is the Chupacubra (sp?) which is just joke monster
anyway, although the way they wrote it up isn't funny. 15 foot
monkey/dinosaur with Essence Drain and fast! Kind of like a miniature
Godzilla, Mexican style. I can't remember what the reference comes from.
Some old black and white movie I think.

the beginning :)

Yes, I have the Aztlan sourcebook. And realizing the bang-up job FASA does
at accuracy usually, I'm looking for someone with more knowledge of that
type of environment or that are to clue me in. What types of normal critters
would be common there? And other than the critters they recomend in the
Azzie book, what other critters should they look at facing? I'm really
trying to go for a realistic campaign on this one, rather than my standard
fare. And frankly, a great deal of the info in the Azzie book needs to be
taken with about a pound of salt. Thank god for folks like Tzeentch and
Raygun! ;)

Everyone should know about Chupacapras, it is one of the most important
modern myths (assuming it is a myth). The name means goat sucker, it is a
creature with immense strength that drains the blood from livestock and pets
through a single hole. It is prevalent throughout Spanish speaking areas in
the Americas, I think it started in Brazil or one of the island countries in
the early 1990's but quickly spread. Descriptions vary but it is normally
described as being bipedal, black, with large fangs, big red eyes and spines
down its back, possibly with bat wings. A great many dead animals have been
attributed to the Chupacapras, and although many can be explained away as
misidentified dog attacks, cats, coyotes et cetera, there are some that have
been properly studied and have the experts stumped.
The origin for the goatsucker has been explained as an alien, a US genetic
experiment, a mutant from all the pollution, or a demon portending the
Apocalpse (or should that be Awakening?).
Anyone interested in human nature or group psychology would be well off
finding out about this beastie.
Do an internet search and you should find all you need on the goatsucker,
though no doubt most of it will be in Spanish, as it is the Hispanic
equivalent of Nessie or Bigfoot. www.forteantimes.com also has all sorts of
info and links.
I don't think it was ever 15 feet tall though. That really is a shame.

According to Brother Justice, at 16:09 on 20 Oct 00, the word on the

A book or web site about the real-world wildlife of the area is probably
the best way to handle this. That way, you know what basic critters to
harrass your players with, as well as find paranormal equivalents. For am
ore immediate solution, following is a list of critters from Paranormal
Animals of North America whose little map indicates they live in or near
the Yucatan -- or at least the northern half of Mexico, since that's about
how far most of the maps go...

Aardwolf
Bandit
Birdman
Black annis
Boobrie
Chimera
Corpselight
Devil rat
Devilfish*
Dour
Dzoo-noo-qua
Embracer
Fideal*
Firedrake
Gabriel hound
Gila demon
Greater armadillo
Greater unicorn
Hoop snake
Incubus
Juggernaut
Lesser thunderbird
Loup-garou
Man-of-the-woods
Mermaid*
New leatherback*
Nomad
Piasma
Saber-tooth cat
Salamander
Sea drake*
Serpent, freshwater
Serpent, saltwater
Shadowhound
Siren
Stormcrow
Tachypus
Talis cat
Troglodyte
Wodewose
Wyvern

"Jungle animals" is about the best I can come up with, not having an
intricate knowledge of the area in question. Your best option would still
be to find a decent book about wildlife and look up what kinds of animals
live in South/Central American jungles.

How about blood spirits?

This may be to late for your game but:
In terms of South American Paranaturals I've used, are a Giant Awakened
Anaconda powers of Regeneration, Enhanced Quickness and Constriction,
had a STR of about 15.
Jaguars with Adaptive colouration and Piranha with Concealment (They
were actually transparent).

Hope that helps
