That's really a cool, lo-tech idea!
Probably the funniest example I've seen of runner type characters
doing business without knowing the language, was the John Woo movie,
Once A Thief.

In it Chow Yun Fat and his associate were dealing with a French
underworld figure. Only their third partner knew both French and
Cantonese. She didn't want them to take the job, because the two of them
had 'promised' to retire. So, on the one hand she told them that the job
was horrifying and dangerous, on the other, she told the French fixer
that they weren't interrested. Like true runner mentalities anyway, Chow
and his buddy agreed to the job!
