Why is it not surprising that Dvixen would be the first person to answer
this? Why is it not surprising that she knew the answer at all? Why does
everyone keep insisting that Dvixen's actually Lofwyr The Great Western

Actually there is no literal traduction for "arsehole"
or "asshole". But the closest would be "pendejo"
(pen-the-ho) but the worst insults wouldnt be just a
word but a whole sentence. Like "chinga tu madre"
(fuch you mom) or something like that...

Hope it helps

*THIS* is the word I was trying to figure out while I listened to Paolo and
Dvixen come up with "Cabron". And BTW, the translation for
"chinga..." is
"fuck YOUR mother" by the time tense is considered.

Okay, you're not the first to say that. And DVixen
said it'd be "cabron".

So which is it? What do those two words LITERALLY mean
in English - if there is a literal translation that way?

Oh, I'm not looking for the worst insult possible. I
have a Mexican character who's dealing with the kind
of person you would call an asshole. So the Mexican
calls him that - but the idea is to do it in Spanish.
So, as I just asked, what DOES "pendejo" mean in
English - and what about "cabron", which was DVixen's
suggestion?

Btw, I think I've heard the word "chingada" used
before. That's pretty close to "chinga etc." - any
idea what THAT one means in English?

Cabron actually mean f**ker (fragger). I'm gonna have a chat with the
person who told me what cabron meant. ;)

According to Rand Ratinac, at 23:04 on 6 Oct 99, the word on
the street was...

> Oh, I'm not looking for the worst insult possible. I
> have a Mexican character who's dealing with the kind
> of person you would call an asshole. So the Mexican
> calls him that - but the idea is to do it in Spanish.

My Spanish is limited to about five words and one sentence (which I won't
post for fear of getting flamed by all Spanish-speakers on the list ;) so
I can't help you with the actual translation, but I do have some general
thoughts on this matter.

The thing is, they would probably not call him that literally -- they'd
likely use a word that means something entirely different, but is
equivalent in "insulting power" to the English word "arse-/asshole"
(if
you know what I mean).

Your best bet, IMHO, is trying to find out what word is used in Spanish-
speaking countries to translate "arse-/asshole" with for movies and TV
shows, and use that.

I'll look around and see if I can find it on my harddrive, but somewhere on
the net I downloaded a word file. If was about 5 pages long and contained
common curses in about 35 different languages. All of them had loose and
literal translations, along with their frequency of use.

IIRC, the Spanish and Russian lists were the longest...

must people dont even know what literally mean in spanish:-)

ok lets see Pendejo is a very idiot person, its used as an insult.
Cabron also dont have a literally translation,a cabron is a big male
goat, is a buck, hegoat or cuckold, and as dunkey the reciber of the
insult recives the "peculiarity" of the animal". Cabron could be used as
an insult and is something like idiot stuborn but can also mean a very
skillfull person
example he is a marvelous programer
he is a cabron programing

But as i alway explain in albures 101 tone is everything. Pendejo in
every tone you use is and insult, cabron in a friendship tone could be
in certain circles like chummer.

my sugestion is that the mexican character would call the other pendejo,
if any action of tha asshole caracter afects directly the mexican he
upgrade the pendejo to pinche pendejo.
Cabron isnt apropiate to the situation.

> Btw, I think I've heard the word "chingada" used
> before. That's pretty close to "chinga etc." - any
> idea what THAT one means in English?

o jesus ok here we go...

first both words came from the world chinga the literal meaning of the
world is rape, it was used to describe a hijo de la chingada or son of a
rape mesoamerican woman how was raped by a spanish (nothing to do with a
son of a bitch whose translation means hijo de puta a diferent insult).
As the mother is the cornerstone of the ego of a mexican macho (refer to
any Pedro Infante "the aztlan-mexican totem" movie) any insinuation to
his mother is a direct insult to his honor-ego-humanity so is going to
be punished. One of the worst insult is a chinga tu madre pendejo, if
you said loud to somebody normaly is the beginig of a fight. this is
refer as mentada de madre. thats the chinga tu .. fill the blank with
the name of a woman relative. If you came to Mexico and want to to
comite a painfull suicide go to the Zocalo and shout chinge su madre la
virgen de Guadalupe. when some street gang go to ripe your head off tell
them i said hello.

now la chingada refers obiusly to the raped woman, but it has to be
"evolutionate" to something awful or horrible. if the situation is of la
chingada is means that is a very bad situation. if the chingada come to
give us a ride (ya nos llevo la chingada) we are fucked. if the cold is
the la chingada or the hot is the la chingada is to hot or cold to the
people that said that. Black as la chingada means that is total
darkness. And we can continue talking about this for days.

Hope this help you

Doc, you need The Alternative Dictionary!

You can find the Spanish part at:

http://www.notam.uio.no/~hcholm/altlang/ht/Spanish.html

No better place to find rude words and phrases in every
conceivable language. :)

cabron: billy-goat (literal), cuckold (figurative)--also
used to mean SOB, bastard, dishonest or treacherous
person
pendejo: idiot. Rather strong in Mexican Spanish (can't
use it on TV)
chingada: (not listed, but 'chingar' is listed as 'to f*ck'
and 'chingalo!' is 'f*ck it!' so 'chingada' is probably
'f*cker'.

Try also: asqueroso/asquerosa, capullo, el de atras, rul,
rulacho, trastero. (Apologies to any Spanish-speakers on
the list--I was just searching on Doc's term and listing
what I found.)

PURE slang term if I'm correct. BUT, as I'm not a major slang user in
Spanish (my knowledge of speaking is strained as it is), I'm gonna default to
the real speakers on this one.

Chingada is slang, there isn;t any real literal english translation. It
cam mean anything from f*ck to sh*t.

Combine it with something about the person's mother is you want to
really piss off a mexican.

The problem is that Cabron does not mean asshole it is more like mmmm this
is hard because no expresino in spanish has only one meaning for example
Cabrón in an agressive way would mean "Son of a .........." because the
word
itself is told to people who are in a way afecting you directly or on the
other hand yo can tell it to a person who is exelent in what they are doing
"Ese wey esta cabrón" (That chummer is amazing) So depends on what you
want
to say the word that you use.

So my dear GM expresses at last. One thing you forgot to mention is that in
Spanish specially mexican spanish there is a problem, we have a double sense
for almost every sentence or more specyfically slang expression or idiom.
You see with its exeptions, the most offending word can mean the most
friendly coment.
As for chingada it can mean Screw up,
EX: Esto esta de la chingada- This is all fragged up
Or Ya chingué- I made it.
So you see there is no specific meaning for anything.

I do agree with you in regards to how translations and context can mean a
lot. However, I do believe that Spanish (and many other languagues for that
matter) do have literal translations, which are also the formal translations.
It is actually no different than English in all truth. The recent "Top 10
Things to Never say to Dvixen" post are an example of this. Several of the
statements posted there would be highly derogatory in any other instance,
*BUT* given circumstance, they might not necessarily be so.

Lovely, quite lovely, Rat. :)

I wonder what would happen if you searched on
"rectum"?

Btw, everyone, thanks for all your input on this
admittedly weird question. :)

Since I had a lot of people ask for this file, I've put my "Curses" file up
on my web server. Its a word 97 doc about 10 pages. The address is:
http://141.211.137.245/Shadowrun/WordDocs/Curses.doc

Please let me know if there is any trouble getting to it.
