The thunderbolt is a burst fire cop gun. The picture of a cop in New
Seattle has him carrying a predator. Why do I bring this up?

Watch Robocop
His gun is exactly the same as the predator except that it fires
burst fire, like the thunderbolt. i.e. FASA got the idea for two of
its guns from Robocop.

There are plenty more "stolen" weapon ideas in SR. For example, the Walter
Palm Pistol illustration in SRII bears a striking resemblance to Deckard's
pistol in Blade Runner (going by Japanese adverts for a 1:1 scale model of
said weapon, anyway -- it's been a while since I watched that movie), while
a lot of the other weapons in books like the SSC have been derived from
1960s/'70s experimental weapons. The CMDT, for example, looks just like the
carbine version of the Stoner 63, the Beretta 70 is a Bushmaster 5.56 mm
SMG with a thinner magazine and some other stuff, while the Colt M22a2
resembles an HK36 with some crap stuck on.

Actually, Bryan, I saw a picture of a Beretta modded
up to look like a Predator. Or something. :) There
wasn't any text with the image, so I'm not sure WHAT
was going on there. Might even still have the pic at work...

That's because the pistol in Robocop is a Beretta 93 with some stuff added
to make it look bigger and more impressive. FASA's artist(s) then copied the
look of the front part of the weapon for the Ares Predator in the SRII main
rules (there was no picture of the weapon before that time, only of the
Predator II).

Actually, I really seem to recall a picture of the Predator in the SRI main
book. Maybe I'm wrong, but I swore it was there. I'll look when I get home.

Ahhh, well THAT explains things...

Yes, looking at the pic the back half is rather different.

Save yourself the trouble, it isn't there :) As far as pistols go, the only
page with weapon illustrations in SR1 has the Streetline Special, Colt
American L36 (which is actually copied from a BattleTech illustration, look
in Tech Readout 3026, p. 113), Beretta 101-T and Beretta 110-T (which was
never given stats).
