Oh, Thwap me again, PLEASE. NeoAnarchists tGtRL p.25 there is a reference
to a mage trying to go into space. He states that astral space got cold
and that this was odd for there is not 'heat' in Aspace. As he lofted
towards the edge of the atmosphere his 'fears' decended unpon him. As he
fell away from space he thought he saw things moving. The next posting
accused him of incompitance and insanity, but. Lets go this way; 'life'
in space is so huge, diffused, and massive timewise ( it takes place on a
time scale thousand [ or greater ] than ours ) and is made up of things that
are just out right alien ( not E.T. type alien ), like gravity, fusion, and
such, that our short timeframe, narrow minds just cannot deal with it.
Maybe only a man that was insane would see more than nothing and those of
us who are sane; our minds just run away screaming.
And for anyone interested, read the book called 'A Changling Star'.
title might be wrong, will check and post title and author later.

In reference to Life in the Astral outside the Biosphere:

Maybe so. Go play "Call of Cthulhu". Or better yet, use Arkangel's
"Cthulhu Shadowrun" conversion write-up (which I can either forward to
you or hand to you in Real Life).

All right, all right, all right. So the Subject line of "'Roids" was
less than successful. Thwaps with wet carps to all of you who
immediatley thought of hemeroids. It never entered my mind. But then,
all my friends and in my environment, the word 'roids _always_ means
steroids.

But I still haven't really heard any repsones to my question. The one
post I did see (sorry, I forgot your name) seemed to severaly
underestimate the power of steroids. Maybe modern (1994) steroids are
very weak compared to muscle augmentation or replavcement, but what about
2054 steroids? Or as they were called in that one post, super steroids?

Steroids are very powerful substances. As an example, it has taken me 13
months to go from 140 pounds to 180. I know a kid I used to work with
(actually I was his boss), who went from about 115 to about 150-160 in
only about 4 months. And he looks huge. Just think what 2054 steroids
could do? But the primary motivation for them would be cost. Corps and
ganger and governments are getting whupped on by nasty shadowrunners like
the kind we play all the time. They are grossly outgunned. The reason
stuff like kamikazee and jazz and similar combat drugs are out there is
to even the playing field some. What about a more permanent solution,
but still less than 1000Y for a 60 day cycle?

This is all just food for thought, but I would still like some good
responses to the question. Maybe we can get a good solid debated going.

Ok, then here it is:

First of all, if steroids are to be included in SR, they should not
permit to exceed the racial maximum for strenth. 2nd, I heard that
you have to train yourself for steroids to have effects. So you would
have to make some kind of rule that will force the PC to train himself
during the game. You have to remember that when a player gives
priorities to the PC, that means how much time (or even karma) he
spends for that categorie. That means when the player gives a low priority
(C,D or E) to the PC's attributes, he doesn't spend much time to hone his
muscles or have a keaner intelligence or be more charismatic. Even if he
gives high priority (A or B) to his attr., if he assign only 2 to his
strenght, that means he doesn't train himself very often (in this case I'd
say never). I think steroids are too activity dependent to put in the rules.

Ok, now I suppose that the player assign priority D to attributes.
He says that for a short time in his PC's life, he (the PC) takes
steroids and trains himself heavily for 9 month. He takes 80 pounds
in muscles. This let him go from 2 to 5 in strenght. That was only a
week ago. So he's strong. He stops his training (remember priority D),
Just because he's not strong naturally (it's not in his genes), if he
doesn't start training soon after that, he will start to lose his strenght.
Let say in the same rhythm he gained it: 1 point per 3 month.

I must say that I'd keep the disadvantages of today's steroid just to make
them think twice about the way they want strength. I would add something
like the loss of essence for prolonged use (1 point per year). It would
be possible to regain essence by stopping steroids and wait 1 year per
point.

Anyway, just some food for... Drek! everybody say that!

Thanks Stephan for the respone to my steroid question. It makes a lot of
sense. But what I had in mind was not for PC's. They would be far to
ineffecient and time consuming for the majority of PC's. But maybe for
corp or military guards? I mean, stuff like kamikazee and jazz was
designed with those guys in mind. What about them?

Anyway, just stirrin' up the pot and causing trouble...

Well, not that I know shit about 'roids etc, but I'm gunna stick my bit in
(like I always seem to do) anyhow. What you seem to be describing is a
reduced cost stat enhancement program. Like, instead of spending 5 karma
(representing the time and effort taken) to get your strength from 4 to 5,
you only spend 3.

Nope, you're lucky Ivy isn't still on here, or you'd have gotton a real what
for when you suggested losing essence for taking drugs. Give 'em
disadvantages, but not essence loss.
