So, who's going to be the first to give us a useful SR .wdgt? :)

What do you want it to do? That is the hardest thing. If you want it
to roll 9 dice with TN 8 and show you the results, it may be simple.
However it would be best to determine what you want it to do, what is
the scope, etc.

I'm not looking for anything in particular, just wondering if anyone is
(thinking of) working on something that may be of use for SR :)

A widget -- a simple little program for Dashboard
(http://www.apple.com/dashboard, which I'd almost use even if it offered
nothing else than the way cool ripple effect :)

Yes.

They are written in HTML and Javascript, so it shouldn't be too hard to
re-write them so that they run in any Javascript-capable web browser.
(The few I just tried didn't work like that right away, though, and
would probably require some tinkering.)

True, but OTOH, if you don't ask, you may not get :)

How about an SR4 style dice roller, you input the number of dice, hit the
button, it rolls vs TN5 or whatever it'll be, and gives you number of
successes?

As is the case with any software, however, until the bugs are worked out of
tiger, (Mac OS 10.4) it's going to be very limited because most people won't
go to tiger until they at least fix the incompatibility with Adobe Creative
Suite...

I would gladly provide an SR4-style dice roller, but we do not yet
know how rolling dice in SR4 works. I understand that the TN of 5 does
not change, but what about a rule of 6 or rule of 1, etc.

Of course there are many people that do not care about that and have
already taken the plunge. :-)

That could be a bit of a problem, yes... Although it's not too hard to
write an app to do this kind of dice rolling and change it as needed.

Of course if I wanted to localize said app into Dutch, etc. it may be
a problem because changing things tends to cause lots more effort to be
put into the app. Better wait until I know how to do SR4 dice. The
question is whether I mod SRDiceRoller to handle SR4 as an option or
write a new app.

I was looking into programming these widgets earlier today, and it's
nowhere near as involved as using Xcode/Interface Builder to build a
true app -- it appears to be almost all HTML and Javascript plus a few
.plist files. Like I said to Anders, this should make it a reasonable
proposition to do a non-Dashboard version that may appeal to the rest of
the list as well :)

It shouldn't be too hard to convert it over, I think.

<AOL>Me too...</AOL>

See, the good thing when you utterly suck at art is that you
don't have to care about things such as Adobe CS.
(now, the fact that VLC crashes when you go from full-screen to
windowed mode is a bit more problematic)

Argh! "Mac" is not an acronym -- it's the short version of "Macintosh"

Derek: Incompatibilities with CS2? Do you have some reference links
that discuss the problem?

Not CS2, but CS, I've got a few friends in europe that're graphic designers
that upgraded only to find that in adobe CS and a couple other graphic apps
(I don't recall which ones) that the app would open but when you tried to
open a file or create a new one the app would crash, supposedly it was
something that adobe was supposed to have had a fix for as an update, and
apple fixed in 10.4.1, but, I'm a little leary of having an OS that right
off the bat (less than a week after it's release) had to have a patch
released as one of the main uses of macs (being graphic work) was useless
because they made the OS incompatible with the software...

I'll wait till 10.4.2 or .3 comes out, then I'll upgrade, as it is, I've got
10.3.9

Don't I know it! For crying out loud, people, Tiger came out on Friday, our
software isn't compatible yet!

Emacs (the http://www.webweavertech.com/ovidiu/emacs.html version
anyway) and Desktop Manager (but I just discovered that there's a new
version, 0.5.3, that does work).

SRDiceRoller still works, though :)

It had better! :-) If it doesn't, or if people have suggestions, or
if people want to help localize into other languages, please let me
know. I am working on other tools as well. Probably will require
Panther or Tiger. Sometime in the future all the tools will require
Tiger (because I hope to convert things to CoreData use), but not quite
yet.
