Howdy!

I saw "The Newton Boys" last weekend with a few of my friends, and they
seemed keen on the idea of doing a train or bank robbery as a run. Given
the electronic nature of money in Shadowrun, I thought a train robbery
would be a better idea. So here's my question: Are their any published
sourcebooks or adventures where there is information presented on trains in
the shadowrun universe? In addition, has anyone run a similar adventure,
and if so, how did it go and do you have any tips? Thanks in advance.

For information on trains, check the 'Getting Around' section of place
sourcebooks. Most give a little blurb about trains and other forms of
transportation.
Now, in terms of runs, I would suggest hijacking-extraction types of runs.
Perhaps there is a courier on a train, or there is some chip being
transported in the cargo. Also, a good deal of heavy equipment is
transported by train, so the players might be hired by a fixer to
'liberate' some of the UCAS Army's equipment.

If you're feeling particularly nasty, have the runners be hired by an
"Ecogroup" to stop a train delivering nuclear waste into Calfree.. with orders
to get the toxic car and shuttle it to point x as evidence the group can use
against the corp.

Of course.. it's not really an ecogroup that's hiring.. and what's on the
train, while nuclear, is certainly not waste.

And if you're feeling really sick... have some vatican symbols painted on it.

I remember doing this about 11 months ago involving Winternight attempting to
smuggle Ubyr (yes, we do crossovers, so SUE ME!!! ;) from one part of
Illinois toward St. Louis (where it could cause all sorts of mayhem). The
final fight involved a train sequence, and it was really good. Actually, the
train smuggling got interesting as the route followed the Illinois River (sort
of), and passed all the neat places like Meredosia and Beardstown (yes, I am
from there at some historical point). Especially the scene where the borrowed
A10 was coming around and the Hind popped up over the trees, with the train
bridge beneath 'em. Oh yeah, loads of fun that was. Never saw so many
thermite-type grenades in all my time gaming.

PS (Why'd they use a train? It was the only thing long enough to do it
without arousing as much suspicion)

There is also a little bit of info about trains in Rigger 2. It's only
about 1/4 of a page, though, and is mostly concerned with game rules for
trains, but it could be useful if you plan on doing a train robbery or
hijacking adventure.

Another handy idea that I've used to add a little flavor, but to avoid
trains is to use a convoy. Don't shoot me for not remembering its name,
but one of the two Semi's given in Rigger I is actually a convoy in
itself. The head truck can have something like six or seven trailers
being pulled behind it.

When I used it, it had already been hijacked and the team needed to try to
secure the convoy. Interestingly enough, they didn't do so hot and wound
up accidentally blowing up the whole kit and kaboodle.

There's a little bit about trains in general in R2. Other than that
he only noteworthy train that comes to mind is the one that runs from
Seattle to LA. IIRC it's a highspeed monorail that breaks down a
lot.

That'd be fun if the characters are hired to steal something from the
train and the train breaks down and comes to a stop in Tir Tairngire
(after the runners have stolen the object(s)). They'd have to deal with
whomever they stole from, the train's security, Tir's security, etc. And
maybe the train was stopped on purpose (sabatoge) by someone after the same
thing as the PCs.

A portion of one of the adventures in the Harlequin's module is set on a
train.
