Like so many other things, to play or not roleplay across gender boundaries
is dependent on the skills and maturity level of the player, GM, and group
as a whole.

I don't care if anyone in my group wants to play a female (all my players
are male), but there are some who I know would just never try it. I don't
blame them, because I don't think they'd be very good at it, and I'm glad
they recognize their own limitations. Not that I'd stop them if they wanted
to try, though--it's all part of the challenge.

As GM, I have to play females all the time--NPCs come in all shapes and
sizes. Sometimes I do a good job, sometimes not. Hopefully my players are
tolerant.

One thing I've found though, is that almost all of my NPCs are male when I
first start creating them. In fact, usually male and human. At a certain
point in the creation process, I stop and ask, "Would this character be more
interesting as a woman?" Or Elf or Troll or whatever. That way, I generally
have the skill, style, and personality worked out long before gender ever
enters into it.

Did I have a point here? Basically, some people can roleplay characters very
different from themselves, and some cannot. Some groups can handle that
kind of unique challenge and some will just devolve into a bunch of bad dick
jokes. (My own group, BTW, finds a balance. We make the dick jokes first
and then pull ourselves together for the more serious parts.) It all depends
on the people. Hopefully groups will explore their limits and try to expand,
but also recognize when something doesn't work for them.

The guys in my group couldn't handle it. I've in no way suggested that
nobody can play female characters. In fact, I played for a while as a female
halfling thief in D&D, and I'm not sure I did it well. Maybe my bias comes
from my Theatre major. Maybe it comes from playing with a group of guys who
were very immature & inexperienced with women (One didn't know what PMS was,
okay?) At this point, I'm just going to shut up & climb under a large
bulletproof rock & listen.

Of course, having characters interested in role instead of roll helps, too.
The above group had more interest in power than story. Our GM's plots were
often something like, "You find yourself teleported into a room full of
monsters/rivals/etc. Roll initiative." I suppose at that point, gender is
irrelevant.

If I had some more mature players, it'd be allowed, and if I were a player,
it'd be up the the other GM. It depends on the players.

It's like the drinking age: some 16-year-olds can drink responsibly. Some
30-year-olds can't. Ditto for gamers & various roles.
