Hello all,

I will be in England for the next couple of weeks, with a few days in Paris
thrown in. So, I was wondering if there was anything Shadowrun related that
I can pick up in either place that I can't get here in the States that is
worth having. Thanks for the input.

Well..Take lots of pics..Especially of places like Castles and
Cathedrals..stop in at a Cathedral or two and do some Brass
rubbings..Do lots of them..While in France you can try and find the
France Source Book..What it looks like or what it is called in the
native toungue I have no idea..But that one would be worth grabbing
and later trying to translate..Again take lots of pics..Especially of
places that peek your interest and look like places that a runner
might step out of or meet at..Pick up match books with resturant
names and hotel names on them..try and get menus and flyers and
brochures..
Then when you get back to the states..incoorporate these props into
your game..send your runners over seas..or some such...

You can get town maps at tourist informations for free or
little quite often. If you don't take much pictures you can
buy picture post cards. They give a good over view to
"objects of interest". Maybe you can get some local music.
Ask the assistant for something traditional if you like
musical background.

I've bought two or three books which tell about classical
local stories when I was in Scotland last year. They give a
lot of adventure ideas.

Yes, do that!

How to find comic/fantasy stores:
(at least how I did it)

Get an adress list of GAMES WORK SHOP from GB and France.
They are some times in the White Dwarf magazine. These
stores are often easy to find. The guys working there do
often know if and where there is a REAL Fantasy store. Maybe
FASA has an Adress list of their distributors on their Web
page. That would be the easiest way! I know that FanPro
(German FASA) has. Good game shops are in London(who
wonders):Orcs Nest and Aberdeen:(oh forgot the name). In
Oxford had been one 10 years ago. Maybe the british list
members can help if you ask them.

Another good thing is to read some books which include a lot
of land scape descriptions like 'Cadfael' or the canterbury
tales. When you visit the places you sometimes seem to
remember and everything becomes familiar.
- who has been in Seattle using his SR BBB as as map last year?

hope that helps

No suggestions on what to pick up, but make sure you have stuff that is
WATERPROOF. The rain over there (England) is vindictive. Then again, my
stuff was waterproof, and I still got soaked to the bone. (Luckily both my
camera were dry, even though there was an inch of water in my backpack...)

Another good way is to meet up with a gamer who actually lives there, as
they'll be bound to point you in the right direction (I've found stores in
lots of towns this way).

Or buy a gaming magazine from the country you're in (not much chance of
finding these in many countries, though) and browse through the adverts --
game stores tend to advertise in them :)

A way I've never tried, but which should probably work, is to find a
phonebook (like at a post office) or the local equivalent to the Yellow
Pages, and look for game stores; be sure to also look under the word for
"game store" in the language of the country you're in.

I intended to, but I didn't have the time to explore the city (less than
24 hours doesn't give much time to try such things). There was a story on
the list last year about someone getting lost and using the Seattle
Sourcebook to navigate through downtown Seattle, though.

++++++++++

Do that here in the U.S., and you get a lot of stores that sell pool
tables and such. Looking for Comic Book dealers is a better bet, as many of
them also deal games (at least, in the US) and game magazines, or have
employees who are gamers, or at least would know where to find games stores.
Science Fiction bookstores are also a good bet, but I don't think those are
common- Chicago only has 2, that I know of.

Vindictive? Yeah, that sounds about right. Several years back I
went to England for a couple of weeks. I was hoping to see some
real weather, but it was sunny and bright for the entire trip (except
for about 5-15 minutes of light rain while we were on the road). I
was greatly disappointed...

Heh - that's the disadvantage of having watertight gear. :-)

I resent that, it hasn't rained here for nearly 2 days, and week had
bout 6 clear days in March.....

Shadowrun wise, I'm not too sure, I'm assuming that David is american
and is closer to FASA and we are. You might be able to get some out of
print stuff in variouse shops.(I've seen NAN 1 and 2 and RBB about)

I've not found much in London, Virgin has a little well thumbed stuff,
and Orcs nest have the basics (And boxes of 36 identical D6 for 5 quid
:-). Lancaster has a well stocked role playing shop with loads of
Shadowrun source books, senarios, and novels.

You could try looking on the web for any conventions happening.
(Stabcon 2-4 July in Manchester.)

Leisure Games (in Finchley (north London)) has quite a bit of SR stuff,
including several books that are hard to find. It's best to take your time
looking around the shop, though (it's reasonably well organized, but
there's a LOT of stuff in a small shop there).

There're also a couple of good(ish) RPG shops in Stoke-on-Trent...
And there's a Virgin Megastore in Manchester that's not too bad.
Also, there's a Model Shop on Deansgate in Manchester, which was very good,
last time I looked.
