I know this one's probably been asked a long time ago, but I don't
seem to have the answer anywhere.

The rules for dermal sheathing say "A character cannot gain the
benefits of both dermal plating and dermal sheathing. Sheathing is a
superior form a plating and can only be fitted if pre-existing plating
over the same area is removed."

Trolls, with their natural dermal armor, wouldn't have any problems
with this, right? Looking at the terminology used, I would tend to
think that the restriction just refers to the cyberware implant,
"Dermal Plating".

Under SR1 and SR2, the description of the dermal plating implant did
state that it consisted of "plates bonded to the user's skin to form
dermal armor." but in the BBB3, the phrase "dermal armor" does not
even apear in dermal plating's description.

Am I corect then, to assume that dermal plating is mearly a single,
specific type of dermal armor? And as a consequence, a rule that
refers to dermal plating does not apply to other types of dermal
armor, such as natural dermal armor?

After all, a troll's natural dermal armor consists of "dermal bone
deposition, resulting in spines, rough surface texture, or an
armor-plated effect." It's unclear as to whether or not that _could_
even be removed, and even if it were removed, it would most likely
grow back.

So, basically, what I'm asking, is that if a troll wanted dermal
sheathing, they wouldn't have to undergo any sort of surgical
procedure to remove their natural armor, correct? And also, they would
recieve the benefits of both their natural armor, and the dermal
sheathing?

This is how I interpret that, yes.
