I have just received mail from FASA Mike on FASA's position on the
copyright stuff. I quote:

Date: Tue, May 9, 1995 1:44 PM EDT
From: FASA Mike
Subj: Copywrite....
To: Hobbisius

There is no problem with the shirts as long as you do a couple of things....

The SR logo must have a Circle C (copyright symbol) by it and the word
Shadowrun must have a Circle R (Registered trademark symbol) They can be
small. Plua someplace on the shirt and once again it can be written in
very small type it should say "Shadowrun is a registered trademark of
FASA Corp."

Plus you have to send me one. <VBG>.

Mike M.
FASA

There ya' go, guys! I hope it works out. Basically, we can now proceed
full speed ahead. One thing though.... I hope Mike doesn't think he's
going to get one for free. :-)

Ok, now that the shirt stuff is worked out (at least the copyright status
stuff) here's what _I'M_ going to do.

I'll check on prices of a shirt similiar to the one what was printed last
year (black shirt, white lettering, maybe with an extra colour). Because
of the fact that I got burned last year, I'm going to get the price based
on printing the MINIMUM number required (probably 12). Any extra money
will go to the "Robert Hayden/Killians Red Beer Fund", or will be used for
extra colours or something on the shirt.

Last year the price was $15, and I got burned. My initial thought is
that the price will be in the area of $18 (including shipping) with a
couple extra bucks for you people over the pond.

Now, I need to point out that because the shirt design has the names of
the people purchasing the shirt, there will be a delay in getting the
artwork designed and thus it may be several weeks before you were to get
the shirt after you send in your money.

-------

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO RIGHT NOW

NOTHING!

I'll get the prices, and then post ordering instructions sometime next
week.

Um, no.

You cannot copyright a logo, thus the copyright mark is meaningless.

You cannot use the trademarked logo without permission from the owner.

You should use whatever marks and disclaimers *they* tell you to use; using
the incorrect marks is just as illegal as using the trademark without
permission.

Don't'cha sometimes wish you could cancel a mail message?

But seriously, I'm supprised that FASAMike said use a copyright symbol,
because you can't copyright a trademark.

I dunno. Even if they really got mad and tried to sue us (which is
hardly likely), then I still have that e-mail that he sent me. He said
that that was it, so I'm just assuming that that is _it_. :-)

I should note that I told him efforts will be made to prevent any profit
from being made by any participating party. Mostly for FASA's peace of
mind, but I'm pretty sure we're actually going to do that anyways.
Whatever. It's out of my hands now. ;-)

You can't? *shrug* Must be some wierd American thing... here (I think...)
you can both trademark AND copyright a logo (well, the copyright is on the
logo as an artform, but hey).

Ah... they did give us permission... that's what that was all about.

If he wants one, he'll have to do the same thing everyone else will: send me
an email _privately_ telling me his name, what name he wants to have on the
shirt, and his email address. And then, when Fearless Leader's got the
prices, pay him :)

I'd like to see different colors from the ones on the shirt I'm wearing now.
Though a black shirt is nice, maybe we could do a different color this year?
Like, white with black text?

Nah - Glenlivet - the nearly official wedding gift for ShadowTK

When ever we had times to give away presents - there were always atleast
2 bottles of 15 year old Glenlivet.

I think there was even a fifty year old bottle once.

Besides - 12 year old Scotch gives much fonder memories than just beer, after
all - it had better be a fond memory if you just spent that much money on it :)

I agree with Jani. I think that that message was bull. However, the sender
_did_ sign his name at the bottom exactly like the "real" Mike does. It's
entirely possible that it really was Mike. However, I DO NOT think that he
should get one for free. I'm not about to stand by and watch Hayden lose

Stop the presses! :-)

I just got an e-mail from Mike on AOL, and it _was_ him that sent a
message to Gurth. I replied to him asking him to clarify things, and he
should also probably send a message to Gurth explaining things and
verifying the authenticity of his former message. Sorry if people got
confused about this. ;-)

I'm willing to pay an extra twenty cents (or whatever it'll end up
being) in order to make sure that FASA lets us have nice shirts. Of
course, if it were to drive the price up to $25 or something, that'd be
another story.
And be sure to offer 'em to FASA people at the same price we're
paying...tell them that normally it'd be more since they're not subscribed
to the list, and urge them to join. *grin*

It came from FASAMike@***.com, so I'd say it's genuine. He said he wanted a
shirt in the copyright message Brett Brown posted here, so I told him how to
get one, and that was what I got back.

Making a quick calculation, if say 25 people actually want to pay for the
shirt, and FASA doesn't, it'd be a price increase of about a dollar for
everyone else, right? I'd say that's acceptable.

I don't see why whoever's getting the things printed up has to pay the
extra money for Mike to get one, even if he does get it free of charge.

The list members can take up the slack, can;t we.

Ya know, does getting a list.t-shirt for free, count as profitting from
a FASA trademark? Maybe we should ask him about that, and insist he pays
for it ;-)

BTW, they don't like the idea of getting put on a list, they stated it
at the front of the sourcebooks. They probably have to, like, work or
something, rather than sit at a deck all day, and talk to us schumcks.

Hello all,

I think that if Mike Mulvihill wants us to pony up a free t-shirt for him
and FASA archives in exchange for their fairly benign cooperation we
should give it to them. They're not acting as paranoid as other game
companies could be. I even think we should put DLoH on the shirt and
send one to Tom, as thanks for the great work.

Who knows, perhaps we could coax them onto the list.

Just as a question, where would you propose to put the ex-DLoH on the shirt?
He's got nothing whatsoever to do with this list (except for the obvious: he
was the main man behind the game we're discussing here :). I'm not saying
"no" (or "yes" for that matter), I would just like to know what
exactly you

Yup, that's spelled right -- I've also got a page set up
