I have to go with Mongoose ... I don't like "Elitism" but I don't like
the absorbing into "mainstream". Let me illustrate me point with
Fetishism: There are different reasons for getting into the different
fetishes. One of them is "fetish is underground so it's cool" now it's
being absorbed and commercialized and made plastic (Yes, I picked
fetishism just to make this joke :P) because it's cool. Now the this
doesn't really bother the true fetishists who are "into it" for enjoyment
purposes but it can be rather annoying. Considering the list, how's this
for a comparison: What if Shadowrun was deemed the next big fad (Suspend
Disbelief, folks ;) and so Commercial America/Hollywood/Etc swooped down
and glamorized Shadowrun, taking the teeth out of it, so to speak. and
making it little more than lame merchandising (Yes, I'm thinking of those
crappy G.I. Joe figures and Transformers they're selling now ...) and
general eye candy. After the fad dies out, the die hard fans (ie, us)
are looked upon, not as the ones that where with the game before it was
popular, but instead as those who don't who are out of style. Not a big
deal to me but most annoying none the less. I personally like the
mainstreaming of the "underground", not because I particularly want
fetish fashion, hacking, etc popular, but rather because I feel it's a
step towards greater tolerance. Think about it: What was "normal" in
1950s America was a narrower defintion than in the 1990s.

Favorite line from Payback: "Let her work."

I'm a roleplayer. I've long ago given up on
what Joe Q Public thinks of me and my hobby.
The way I see it that would mean that I could get
second hand SR stuff a hell of a lot cheaper
anyway as the bandwagoneers dump all last
years products.

Can't agree more. Image is nothing, etc. etc. Right now I would be
happy with a "this years' fad" cycle since it would mean I can get
some players. The only thing left for me to do after the fad is over is
to make sure they'll stay :).
I haven't cared about what's in in fashion and music for so long, I
think I can handle one more thing easily. Most attention will go to
computer games, films and merchandising anyway. I don't recall
Star Wars the RPG suddenly getting loads and loads of new
players.
