umm what I forgot to mention was that I was using ftp to many UNIX ftp servers
and I am on VMS... it won't accept a comman like rem man ls tho

I think in ftp there aren't many switches for ls. Bummer.

Oh, yes there are!
First off, "ls -C" gives you a standard VMS-ish output, with filenames
ordered, and stacked side-by-side.
"ls -l" or "dir" gives you filenames, sizes, permissions and owners.

These two will get you a long way in the UNIX ftp server world alone.
