Indeed it doesn't, (IMHO and IIRC) .com, .org and .net were one of the
first domains used when internet was set up, like .gov and they were
intended for following use:
.com --> companies
.org --> organizations
.net --> I have no clue about this one
.gov --> governments

I think originally these were used to try to get some structure and
logic in the internet architecture.
