One hint I have for you is to look at the domain on the email addresses.
I'll grant you that .com, .org, or .net doesn't mean much most of the
time, but my .nl gives exactly the information you're after :)

(In case you're not familiar with these domains, it's the Netherlands.)

Indeed, and I have been identified as an American so many times it makes me
sick... :)

To be precise: any email address that does not end with a country identifier
indicates that it comes from a domain that is REGISTERED in the States.
However, many organisations outside of the US have domains that are
registered in the States (such as my own erstwhile employer), largely to
make it easier to play on a global scale.

<history lesson>
Strictly speaking, ALL domain names should have a country identifier, but
when the DNS standard was being implemented, most of the US sites didn't
bother putting on the country ID (which, by the way, is .us). It was then
presented as a fait accompli, and caused all sorts of hassles a year later
when they hooked up Canadian universities to the ARPANet.
</history lesson>

Also, be aware that many people might work for an international
organisation, which uses the one domain name for handling staff. As an
example, a friend of mine works for Unisys Australia in Melbourne, but his
email is soandso@******.com, not soandso@******.com.au.

And, of course, there is Lady J's case... she uses a freemail account, based
in the States, but accessed from elsewhere.

So, if no country code is present, you can't quite safely assume the person
is from the States.

Networks of their own. For example, AOL really should have a .net domain
name, not a .com.

Nowadays, .net is largely used for groups that can't get their preferred
.com, or the .org domain name. Sort of a miscelleaneous group.

Almost right. :) As I mentioned before, they really should have a country
code at the end. Furthermore, the hierarchy was only to be a suggestion, and
other countries could (and did) implement different naming standards,
usually due to legacy.

As an example, the UK had a nationwide network before the Internet as well:
JaNET. The categories there included (but are not limited to): ac --
academic, co -- corporate, go -- government. These are still used (check out
the addresses of the various Brits on the list). Australia also had a
seperate group (the .oz groups) that are still around, but you can't get an
address in it anymore.

(JaNET had another peculiarity as well... the order was reversed. Instead of
machine.group.category.country, it was country.category.group.machine. E.G.,
a site such as trinity.cambridge.ac.uk would have been
uk.ac.cambridge.trinity. They used a protocol to handle reversing names
around in the UK for a while, but it caused problems, and eventually JaNET
bit the dust and they put in DNS instead)

As a citizen of a geographically large country (the United States of
America),limiting the inquiry to just countries seems to be less then
satisfactory. I there for propose that in the case of large countries, like the
United States, Canada, or Australia that the state or provence also be listed.

I think .net refers to someone with a direct connection to the internet
(as opposed to getting it from an ISP). The difference between getting
your ISPs that end in .com and .net is that the .com ISPs get their
access through someone else. In otherwords, the .com ISPs are middle
men. I was told that you can get better perforance from an ISP that
ended in .net. Or so I'm told. I don't know if this is correct.

In the past, yes. Today, no. .com is what everybody seems to want for
their system, regardless of whether it's in the US or not -- for example,
a broadcasting corp here has tros.com (which is silly when you know their
history, but that's not important here). I believe that .edu and .gov
still are exclusively US, but for the others I mentioned, that no longer
goes AFAIK.
