>>>>>[well, `ello, ev`ryone! Mirage...master illusionist, at your service!
But, today, it looks like I am to be your link to last evening's events...as
I believe, I am the _only one_ not suff`ring the effects of a _raging_
hangover, t'day! Per`aps, I might be able to `elp some o' the sorry bleeders
out, later on. But, for now...I think I'll allow them a few hours to wallow
in overwhelming self-pity! *grin* After we (Roxey, Random, Sahara, Slash, A.J.
Diana, Lady Siam, Dakota, an' myself) converged upon the charming(?) abode of
THE Nexus an' Company, at approximately 21:30:00, we were off to scenic
Puyallup! Nex led us to a rather long stretch of deserted `ighway, which `e
`ad decided would be quite suitable for a friendly drag race. Dakota broke
open one of the cases of Guiness Nex `ad so thoughtfully provided for us, an'
we each took a seat on a crumbling retaining wall, to watch the proceedings.

Upon looking at the good doctor's car, we _all_ realized that our poor, young
samur-a-ssassin didn't `ave a PRAYER! But, they decided to go thru wi' it,
anyway! Such spirit! => They even agreed upon the original terms of the bet-
if Nex won, they would dine in Tir Nan Og...if Jackson won, Nex' cyber-implants
went under the microscope. The race was temporarilly `eld up, while those of
us
who `ad `ad the misfortune to ride wi` THE Nexus, before, convinced `er that
accompanying `er young love on this lil' adventure could not _possiblly_ be the
wisest course of action! Fair Roxey finally conceeded, but not wi`out a large
measure of grumbling! FIANALLY, after long bouts of posturing, an' good-natured
teasing...on the parts of BOTH participants...they were OFF!

An', it was all over, almost before it began! Though Nex' truck was _quite_
fast...it was nowhere NEAR fast enough! To beat Jackson's car, at any rate! It
would `ave required someone very lucky...an', quite thoroughly INSANE to have
beaten him! _That_ was where THE Nexus fell short...`e's only 3/4 of the way
insane! => The ribbing Nex recieved, upon returning to the wall, was intense!
But, `e `andled it all very graciously..._what_ a _sport_! Besides, `e `ad the
lovely Roxey there, to comfort him, in `is glaring defeat! => `e e`en insisted
upon a REMATCH! This time, though, it would be `IS car, a Westwind 2000
Turbo-T,
against A.J.'s! Now, THIS should be an event not to be missed!

Things were going quite well...until the _rest_ of Nex' "cheering section" made
their presence known! It seems that a few members of The Ancients `ad caught
the open invitation, an' decided they wanted to see their ol' gang-mate again!
As I'm sure you can guess, Roxey did NOT take any of this very well...to put it
mildly! FORTUNATELY, Nex is _so_ much faster than she, an' `e was able to get a
`old on `er, before she launched off something bordering on a small-scale
nuclear attack! UNfortunately, she turned `er rage on _`im_! She stared
sreaming
"`ow COULD you?", then `it `im. E`en if it twas only a low-force `and o'
sparks
in the face, it just _`AD_ to `ave `URT! I think, though, that more than
anythin
g, she `ad wounded `is feelings. ~e tried to convince `er that `e `ADN'T
given them an invite...but, she was too furious to listen! She started going on

about `im being "a completely INSENSITIVE bastard...wi' absolutely NO regards
for `ER feelings...an', who could NE`ER understand what it `ad been like, for
`er, treated the way she was by THEM!" When 'e could finally get a word in,
edge-wise, `e tried to defend `imself, an' insisted that `e DID understand what
she `ad been thru. None of us really understood that part...an' `e ne`er got
the chance to elaborate. Roxey slappped `im...`ARD! Then, she just stormed
off,
setting small bits of shrubbery meerily ablaze, as she went.

We thought this would end up calling it an ev`ning. But, I guess the worst
thing you can do is get THE Nexus thoroughly torqued off, then refuse to give
him a (DESTRUCTIVE) out-let, for an immense amount of nervous energy! So, it
was off to find ghouls! Oh, joy....an', find them, we DID! A whole pack, group,
gaggle...whatEVER, of them! There were approximately 12, in the group we `ad
discovered. An', Nex, Dakota an' Jackson `ad them cornered, in nothing flat!
A few of them even led Nex on a merry chase! But,`e `ad told me, once, that `e
used to `unt in The Shattergraves, in Chicago! `e even `as a scar from one of
`is misadventures. So, I guess `e felt right at `ome, tracking the smelly
beast through the rafters of an old barn. Their combined weight (ca. 192 k's!)
must `ave been too much for the ancient beams, though, an' they vacated the
loft...the `ard way! Luckily, Nex landed on Dakota, dear sturdy Ork that `e is!
So, nothing ELSE was broken! An' the ghoul `ad expired, messily, long before it
`ad `it the ground. There was a gaping `ole, where its THROAT should `ave
been!

All in all...it `ad proved to be a successful night of `unting! Six ghouls
bagged! Which gave each of us a bounty of 900 =Y=! Not bad, for an ev`nings
work!

Sorry to say, though, that Nex & Roxey fought the ENTIRE way back! I REALLY
`ope they can get their differences ironed out! Strange as this may seem to
sound, they're really quite good, for one another! *sigh* Young
love....]<<<<<

Subject: Smartlinks (No! Really! Something New!)

I realize the subject of smartlinks has appeared again and again on this list,
but I believe my query is one that has not been deiscused previously, at least
not since I've been on the list. While perusing Todd's Essence Buyback plan,
I pondered the following:

Does a smartlink include both hands, or just one?

Simplicity supports the former. However, a datajack (which can serve as
a smartlink for the properly eqipped gun) is a single jack. Making a smartlink
serve both hands serves to give one two jacks, in a way (though I do realize
the difference between the two).

Consider the implications: A gun is knocked out of hand and must be retrieved
with the opposite digital extremity. Or, for the regaining of Essence, one
could remove the right smartlink but not the left.

To me, common sense says that a single system is all that is required and
that it includes but ONE hand, and that an additional charge will procure
a second connection in the opposite hand, without having to purchase a new
or second smartlink altogether.

Officially, cybereyes include both eyes. The reasoning is that the brain
doesn't adapt to easily to one image type to the other. But the
Reverend
raises a good point about the camera eye. Why not allow another option
in the opposite eye, like this:
Right: thermo, Camera
Left: Thermo, Ret print.

Just out of curiosity, why did you quote this section of the rules? This
applies to the interaction of real-life players, so that some fool doesn't
say "I have Negotiate 6, and Thag has Willpower 2; I roll my dice against
him to convince him to give me his share."

>while i think it is feasible to have a KnowSoft that might contain

Think of it this way. . .the etiquette soft gives you the current jive,
what words are hot, etc. This is true whether it's Street, Matrix, Corp,
or Finland etiquette. If you expand it as an Activesoft as well, it also
helps you gesticulate appropriately in. In all cases, however, they must
be updated periodically (GM discretion); like datasofts, their usefulness
degrades over time as the inmformation becomes outdated.

>another example: how would you justify a skillsoft that helps you in the

No. A leadership skillsoft will give you the teachable, learnable skill
taught by the military, management training courses, and self-motivation
seminars. You learn how to motivate people, keep them on task, and keep
control. Hitler had Charisma-people followed him because they loved him,
not because he was good at motivating them, staying organized, etc. The
average officer has Leadership; Jim Jones (or David Koresh, for a more
recent example) had Charisma.

>you could get a KnowSoft for Sociology, Psychology (group behavior),
>etc...but it will only give you insights on why people may do things, it
>won't necessarily make you a better or charismatic leader...
Correct. Sociology will let you see the forces affecting a group's
behavior. Psychology allows you to deduce the internal forces motivating
an individual. These won't let you lead them. But a Leadership skillsoft
would, because it tells you how to motivate people and keep them working.
But it won't make you charismatic; plenty of people obey the orders of
someone they don't like, because their leader has Leadership, if not
Charisma.

sorry, i don't buy it...i was in the military for 9 years, and i can say
that training does not a leader make...neither does training even give you
leadership skills...the person has to want to lead, and the people have to
be receptive to that leadership...

i havent seen anything on here to convince me otherwise, so i'll keep
playing that social skills cannot be skillsoft based...ya gotta make 'em
spend their skill points on something...

OK, the boys in the lab have been looking at Mathias for some time now. Recall,
Mathias is the name for the Matrix circuitry imbedded in the late William's
thum
(damn term). Anyway, It's a Fuchi-style design, though not one anybody's heard
of before. Big Surprise, New Tech. Anyway, they ran some tests on it. It keeps
trying to access other chipsets; this thing is not complete by itself. On my
deck, it works OK, but that was only after reconfiguring my deck extensively.
I've got a feeling it wants to access other things in William's body. Where's
he buried?]<<<<<

Subject: Skillsofts

>sorry, i don't buy it...i was in the military for 9 years, and i can say
>that training does not a leader make...neither does training even give you
>leadership skills...the person has to want to lead, and the people have to
>be receptive to that leadership...

Well, you have to want to fire the gun to use a Firearms skillsoft. And if
the audience isn't receptive, your TNs will go up. A leadership soft wouldn't
make you a leader, but it would give you the knowledge required to be more
effective. Of course, if the user wasn't willing to lead, then the ship is
in the wrong slot, so to speak.

Getting back to Etiquette softs, which are a more germane example, I believe
these are more viable than a leadership skillsoft, because there is no
contest of will involved. Either you know the slang or you're dead.

activity associated with this node, for your own sake. Consider, we
certainly have the resources to track down and kill all of you, but
it is clearly in our best interest to maximize the efficient use of
these resources. Therefore, I have put together an example of the
range of our power, and urge you all to stand back and forget about
this EONPP case.

The following transcript is taken from the car of your own Packard Belle
and Mind Throttle.

PB>So tell me about this creep who's been tailing us. He's your ex?

MT>Well, yeah. He was also my manager in my racing days. We split up
after I got wired and made a big enough name for myself that I had
to get a REAL manager.

PB>What do you mean?

MT>Well, while I was on the lower circuits, he was able to manage the
deals and info that came through. But when I started getting bigger
offers and the stakes rose, he couldn't keep up and I lost a couple
of big contracts that would have helped. Now, I didn't hold it against
him personally, but he took my hiring someone else personally and got
all moody and grumpy, to the point I couldn't stand it. So I left him.
I always intended to go back if he got back to normal, but he got a
little dangerous. One reason I took that first run with you, Belle.

Just in case some of you didn't figure it out, Herr Ganz is a bad guy.
And his braggadacio IS a front, though he is backed by the Mysterious
Powers That Be. . .but I won't abuse that. No Munchking. :)

Subject: New smartlink discussion? Nah, couldn't happen...

]I realize the subject of smartlinks has appeared again and again on this list,
You can say that again (and again, and again, and again, and...)

]Does a smartlink include both hands, or just one?
I say it's just one. Most people do NOT use both hands, and so don't need the
smartgun in both. Or if they do, they pay for the convenience. There's no
real proof that it would be put in both hands.

On a slightly similar subject: (and I don't know if this was covered in the
essence buyback post) do you buy BOTH cybereyes for the cost listed, or is it
just one? I could see reasons being made for both (like the camera...why would
you need a camera put in both eyes? Stereo pictures???)
