Melting and oxidizing are two different things. Uranium oxidizes at very
low temperatures (low room temperatures), and it is a fast, hot reaction.
You cannot use water to douse a uranium fire; the Uranium will literally
strip oxygen atoms away from the hydrogen so fast that the free hydrogen
won't explode because there isn't any oxygen left. Standard techniques for
fighting uranium fires are to isolate the fire, usually by dumping lots of
sand or other silicates on it, letting the heat turn the sand into glass,
and hoping the glass seals it off.
