I just scoured the SR3 rules for it and it appears the ability to
attack sustained spells while astrally projecting has gone bye-bye.
I need someone to tell me whether there's anything an astrally
present mage can do against a spell that's being sustained. Anything?

Check either SR3 or MitS under dispelling. I can't quote it for you, but
that might be the way to go. Failing that, astrally attack the mage
himself, since he's active on the astral plane as long as he's
sustaining. That should distract him.

Well, dispelling requires you be on the same plane. I admit I
didn't think of that either, thanks for reminding me it existed :)
Do you have a page reference for the rule that states a
spell-sustaining magician is astrally active?

Have their friendly neighbourhood street samurai give the
sustaining mage a hot lead earring in the physical world.

Actually, Tim, the reason the team shaman is trying to
attack the mage is to save the hide of the friendly
neighbourhood street samurai. :) So that plan doesn't
really help much.
