Well... back from a much needed vacation, and presently sorting
through 600+ mails on FAB. <smirk> (Gotta remember to unsub next time I
leave).... Well, now that I'm taking a break from reading volumes and
volumes of garbage (interesting garbage, but, nonetheless....) Here's
something to add to it. I asked this question a while back (a year ago?
Two? Three?) and it was never quite answered well enough for me to come
up with a workable suggestion. There is a Physad in my campaign, Hum,
who's "character schtick" is that he is a master of all aural phenomena.
He bought lots of interesting tech-toys related to sound (ie white noise
generator, etc) and the enhanced sense powers of both Low Frequency and
High frequency hearing. I looked at his powers, blinked, and realized
that I had no friggin' clue what game effects those powers might have...
Any Suggestions?

With high frequency hearing, you can detect ultrasound, which means that
otherwise inobvious sensing mechanisms stand out to you. Both low and high
frequency hearing are going to make it possible to notice illusions (magical
and otherwise) that aren't producing the right frequency components.

I also have a house-rule where every two enhanced senses the character
has grant him a -1 to suprise tests, in an appropriate
situation/environment. ('Course this applies to NPC's and critters as
well. ;o)

Low frequency soundwaves travel farther. And (I think) low frequency
hearing allows you to hear things like heartbeats and earth tremors
(before they become apparant).

Check out what benefits elephants get from their low frequency
hearing.

high frequency hearing-> passive sonar. They can't tell distance
exactly, but can hear and locate people based on high frequency sounds,
much like we can do with normal sounds. THis includes things like
electronics, that give off high frequency noise. (I'm debating adding a
physad power to make high frequency sound, and combine the two for
echo-location).

low frequency-> slightly harder to use, but they can still here low
frequency noise. Low grumbles and creaking npises (possibly the growls
of breathing noise, or similar, too)

Not to mention footsteps from outside the room, across
the hall, and up the stairs... Also, The can here the rumbling of engines
and tanks before they can anywhere near him, like the merc, Bull Pup, was
used for in the story "Tailchaser" in _Into the Shadows_.

Nobody sneaks up on somebody with low frequency hearing... If
you're into spying or recon, that's one power or modification that'll do
you a hell of a lot of good in the long run...

I don't think there are (m)any published game mechanics that apply to
these powers. You could give him maybe -1 to aural Perception tests, to
account for the wider range of sounds he can hear, and at any rate he
should be able to hear things like dog whistles and other high-frequency
sounds, as well as the noises elephants make (too low-frequency for humans
to hear, but they carry several kilometers).

Not that I believe he'll run into many elephants, but there must be other
uses... I just can't think of any right now :/

Has he got a spacial recogniser? Can you get a spacial recogniser as an
adept power? It says in Awakenings that any physical sense mod that you
can get with cyber-ware can be gotten as a physad power. Also, could you
get balance augmentation as a physad power?

I'd say you can get both, because neither works on radio or by some other
"non-natural" means.

Excellent *hands rubbing together* Craig is going to really hate me now...

Not that either of these are that powerful mind you...
