Ok, before GC I sent Mike a mail asking about the whole Regeneration vs.
Cyberware thread, and this is what I got back. I've asked him specifically
to clarify the Vamp in Total Eclipse, as he immediately thought of the same
adventure that I did about the Cyber-Vamp, One Stage Before, and couldn;t
find it...

I'll let you know what he says about that....

OF COURSE NO MIST FORM! Anyone with a natural shapechange and cyberware
would get shredded like so much cole slaw. What we need to know is WHY it
gets expelled! It doesn't make sense! But, then again, PC Shapers not
regenerating in Human form when NPCs can is utter drek as well, so....

OK, as for the why... If you're looking for specific reasons, I can't
necessarrily give them without going into the whole "What is Essence" issue...

Personally, I think it's a simple matter of the regeneration being based
off the beings DNA matrix, and despite essence costs and such, Bioware and
Cyberware isn't written into the creatures DNA matrix. it's the same
reason a cloned body of a person with Bio and/or cyber won;t be cloned with
that cyber/bio.

Of course, I understand and even partially agree with the whole Essence
issue that cropped up last time. The problem is, Essence is not defined,
and not defined for a reason (At least, at the moment undefined. SR3 and
New Magic might change taht). FASA was trying to avoid the religious and
philisophical question of Spiri and Souls within a human being.

Not a problem, it's just somewhat irksome to have an "official" answer
changed on you. I think I might've been MORE annoyed if you HADN'T passed it
on. =)
(BTW, the thing about mist-form, Tom Dowd HAD actually said that vamps with
cyber would go the way of the dodo bird if they tried to shift to
mist-form.... Moot point now, but at least he did include it. )

Of course. That's a matter of individual tastes. *I* can't help it if you
don't have any! =) (Just Kidding)

BTW, you and I seem to spend the same obscene hours doing the list. Don't
you have anything BETTER to do? I know I don't, but I'm a bum. =)

Subject: Vampire Question
Date: Fri, 22 Aug 1997 14:31:29 -0400
Greetings!!!

I am currently writing a module for my campaign, in which the team of
shadowrunners is hired to find a missing girl. To make a long story short the
girl is killed by a female vampire beacuse her male counterpart liked her.
The team will have to sift through a have dozen suspects to find out what
really happened.

My question is, how easy is it to tell if someone is a vampire? If you look
astrally at them do they automatically show up as one, or can they mask their
nature?

Thanks!!!

Depends on the vampire. If they're a spell-slinging initiate with
masking... <EGMG> BTW, spellcasting vampires can really take
advantage of their regeneration power by casting high force spells.
All the drain is physical, which heals immediately.

For a regular vampire, I would say that an astrally perceiving
character would notice something amiss. But, they wouldn't know that
it was because the person was a vampire. Unless, the perceiver had a
whole lot of experience with vampires.

Physically, I'd say next to impossible, unless you want to go with the
"classic" vampire look. Personally, I don;t think they'd look any
different (Unless aybe they were really, really hungry...:)).

Astrally, they'd only be able to mask themselves if they were magically
inclined and initiated. Also, while their astral aura might come up funky,
unless the players have seen vampires before, there's no reason they'd
automatically know that the person was a vampire... Just that they had a
"weird Aura" :]

That all depends...if you use the "Mutant Critters" options in CFS, then it
would be possible for a particular strain of vampirism to have "Aura Masking"
involved, using the Essence like you would Free Spirit Energy. Also, if the
"creator" vampire was an initiated magician, s/he could perform a Quest of
Masking on the child/victim to hide the determinable nature.

Oh, and I forgot something in my previous post...there is that HMHVV test,
but just what would happen in order to get the samples to do the test and
wait for a back to return with...that would be a bit longer than most players
have the time to wait for. Another option is "Detect Vampire", which I am
certain that schmuck De'Vries has by now.

Something to keep in mind concerning *all* critters - the stats
listed in the books are for the average critter. Critters are as
individual as people, and not every vampire will be the same. I
wouldn't allow a "Detect Vampire" spell. A "Detect HMHVV Infected
Human" spell would work. And in my game the players know better then
to believe that every human infected with HMHVV becomes a Vampire
(I'm pretty creative in an Evil GM kinda way).

From a distance a vampire looks just like any normal person, up close, I
would use what the Vampires look like from the movie, Interview with a
Vampire.

As for the part about masking themselves, they could, put if the person
assensing them had previous dealings with vampires, they might put two and
two together, as the aura of the vampire will be flowing with the essential
energies of other people and those energies will not be so easily masked,
hence they will leave a sort of after taste from the assensing.
