Vampires and shapeshifters may be pushing the "alternate
characters" a bit far off the edge. Neither will work any good in a group
- the shapeshifter having quite limited knowledge of the human world (at
least at the beginning, though there are exceptions) and a clearly alien
mind, while the vampire (and all other infected) feeds on Essence, the
most precious of commodities. It could be done, of course, but it'll be a
dark, dark campaign (hopefully, since if it isn't, it's just munchkinism
IMHO).

Werewolves are born to either wolf, werewolf or human parents,
which determines breed (lupus, metis or homid, the last being most common
and the middle being the rarest, since they are deformed and a shame to
the purity of the race), and awaken to their were nature sometime after
puberty/adulthood (unless metis). The moon's position at the birth of the
werewolf (new, crescent, half, gibbous, or full) determines its auspice
(Ragabash, Theurge, Philodox, Galliard, or Ahroun), which can be compared
to caste or profession (trickster, priest/shaman, leader/judge, bard, or
warrior). All werewolves are born to a certain tribe, counting 13 in all,
who all have their own cultural heritage and view on the Garou Nation.
There is only one way to become a werewolf if you're not born to
it. A potent ritual, known to but a few, can be invoked, but requires the
skins from several werewolves the recipient has killed sigle-handedly, a
deed that is nigh impossible to do. The few Skindancers that exist are
dark, evil, mad and power-hungry creatures.
Besides werewolves, there are several other wereraces in the WoD,
though they number even fewer than the Garou. These are called the
Nuwisha, the Gurahl, the Corax, the Ratkin, the Bastet, the Mokole', the
Rokea, and the Anansi, corresponding to werecoyote, -bears, -ravens,
-rats, -cats, -alligators, -sharks, and -spiders.
