Subject: Vegas Question for NAN Books Owners
Date: Mon, 07 Aug 2000 12:59:56 GMT
What happened to Las Vegas after the NAN formed and broke away from the rest
of the old US? Our groups general feeling was that the more pragmatic of the
Sovereign Council would prevail and Vegas would be left operating to bring
in much needed revenue whilst they reorganized their new country.

Also, what happened to the organized crime - I'm more interested in the
mafia - holdings and operations. Weren't Anglo properties and businesses in
the NAN seized or something? Is the Mafia/organized crime still in Vegas?
One idea we had was the Anglo organized crime family's being supplanted by
'more patriotic' Native American crime organizations who'd probably be in
better with the cops.

One alternative to this we came up with was that the NAN let the Mafia keep
its businesses in return for it smuggling the new NAN government needed
supplies that were still restricted from the hostilities before the US/UCAS
and NAN normalized relations and started trading.

I'm more interested in official FASA canon info so if anyone has the NAN
books or knows what happened, any help is welcome. But if anyone has any
good alternative ideas then I'm open to them as well.

Cheers.

Long ago (about a decade), I wrote an article on Vegas:

http://bhopal.flashpt.com/internet/nagee.nsf/docs/lasvegas

Keep in mind that this article was written a long time ago, based on a Las
Vegas from the early 1990's. This Las Vegas bears almost no similarity to
Las Vegas even today, so my vision is _way_ off.

> Is the Mafia/organized crime still in Vegas?

In present day, organized crime's influence over Las Vegas is greatly
reduced compared to it's early days. This trend might reverse by 2060, but I
doubt it. There is way too much _legal_ money being made in Las Vegas for
entertainment corps (Mirage Enterprises, Circus Circus, et. al.) to let
organized crime become a competitor.

The one reason the mob might come back in force is that, in present day,
Vegas has a _lot_ of law enforcement light on it, including federal
(especially the IRS). When the UCAS goes away, that would change, although
the local law (and, of course, the Ute federals) would still be looking.

BTW, modern Las Vegas is largely the result of one man: Steve Wynn. Almost
all of his early fortune came from junk bonds. (Read up on them in Corporate
Shadowfiles if you don't know what those are.) One big gap in my article was
a person like him. Las Veags is full of some really weird, individualistic
characters, which makes it a great setting for role-play.

> in return for it smuggling the new NAN government needed
> supplies that were still restricted from the hostilities before

That would be a good method of the Mob gaining more influence.

According to Mister Incognito, at 12:59 on 7 Aug 00, the word on the
street was...

It's described in a little detail in Native American Nations Volume One,
pages 132-135, including a basic map. What it comes down to, is that it's
in the Ute Nation, and is still the gambling capital of the world (Monaco
is #2, Atlantic City #3). NAGEE 5 (http://plastic.dumpshock.com/nagee)
also has an article about the city, by Wordman.

Strangely, NAN1 doesn't touch on this. All it says about crime is that
most crime consists of anarchistic gangs with a "keen business sense," but
nothin about the larger crime syndicates.
