To fire the Vehicle Laser, do you use Laser Weapons or Gunnery?

I would say Gunnery, because you aren't personally aiming the weapon...
the computer and servos are, you're just telling them where to.

Hoo hoo!

Now that's a good question.

Personally, I'd say the fact that it's a vehicle-mounted weapon
overrides the fact that it's a laser weapon, so you use Gunnery.

Of course, I don't know if that's canon or not - or if there even IS a
canon ruling on that. But that's my call. Pay attention, boys and goyls
o'mine. :)

Following on from that, any weapon attached to a vehicle (be it a
holdout pistol, an SMG or an assault cannon) also uses Gunnery (unless
you pull it off the vehicle and hold it yourself).

Think about it this way - Laser Weapons teaches you how to use a
hand-held laser. Gunnery teaches you how to use a weapon that's mounted
on a vehicle - a weapon NORMALLY operated by aiming it with a joystick -
or by pointing your vehicle at your target - and pressing a button. Now
you have a vehicle-mounted laser being fired in the same way as you
would fire a vehicle-mounted missile launcher or a vehicle-mounted MG.
What skill do YOU think is more appropriate.

Of course, you can then get into the issue of pintle-mounts and the
like, where the gun is RESTING on the vehicle's mount, but being fired
by hand. In that case, logically you would use the appropriate skills
(heavy weapon, laser weapon, SMG, whatever), but to simplify things, you
may just wish to say ANY weapon mounted on a vehicle in ANY way is fired
using the gunnery skill. I think that might actually be how it's
officially treated.

Hmmm...that's a good one. I'd say, if you want to keep it simple, use
Gunnery for all vehicle-mounted weapons. If you want it more realistic,
use Gunnery for any weapon CONTROLLED by remote (joystick) and/or a push
button interface or use the appropriate skill if it's being operated by
hand (pintle-mount, manned turret or the like).

*Troll Doc' looks at the assault cannon mounted on the pintle mount and
scratches his head because he doesn't have Gunnery and thus must default
when firing the weapon. Then a lightbulb appears over his head. He rips
the assault cannon off the mount and starts plugging away at the poor
bad guys with a guttural laugh and a 12 dice heavy weapons skill.*

Would that be a canon ruling on a cannon?

I'm gonna say both. If you are controlling the weapon from inside the
vehicle
and using a turret etc ... use Gunnery
If you are holding onto the grips and swinging the thing around ...
use Laser

We've run into this question here. We actually prefer to use Laser Weapons,
even if the thing is a "Vehicle" weapon. Our reasoning is just that lasers in
general do not target the same as the majority of other "projectile-oriented"
weaponry.

I'd say Laser Weapons, as lasers are aimed in a different way than most
other weapons; you don't need to elevate the barrel for range, compensate
for movement, and so on, and these concepts would be pretty much the same
regardless of whether you're firing a hand-held laser or a vehicle-mounted
on. I think if you're using Gunnery skill to fire a laser you'll be
unconsciously adjusting its aim like you would for a normal weapon, which
is more likely to make it miss than hit.

By the same token if you're using Laser Weapons without gunnery skill
then you're not familiar with gunnery procedures (..eek, my turn to
write a bad sentance).

I'd say that the character would use Gunnery and that if they weren't
familiar with laser weapons (if they have Laser Weapons at any rating
they they are familiar with laser weapons) they would get a positive
modifier (maybe just +1 to the TN).
