SRII, Page 186. There's a description of the symptoms and the fact
that its a 6D disease. Under the description of the Boobrie in PAoNA
it's alluded that VITAS is a retrovirus.

That's all I could find.

There was a theory in some shadowtalk somewhere that VITAS came about to
deliberately kill off certain metahuman types before they expressed. I have
heard it elsewhere too (probably here), and the immortal elves are to blame.
If so, do you think there were any big diseases that went through the animal
kingdom as well? I suppose all the RL animal extinctions can be blamed on
the elves...

I'd say no. One reason that comes to mind being the carrier pigeon. As
I've heard, there used to be whole flocks of these things that would blot
out the sky when they flew overhead. Seems that people got a bit annoyed at
these 'flying pests' so they decided to start shooting them outta the sky
whenever they could. By the late 19th century, early 20th century there
were no more carrier pigeons left except for the rare one or two sitting
stuffed in a museum somewhere.

Elves had nothing to do with thier demise.

Man did.

Just because the IE's claim something dosen't mean that what they say is
true. Personally I tend to beleive that they like to lie a bit to make
themselves seem more important and influential than they actually are.
Here's hoping that Year of the Comet knock's thier ego's down a few notches.

I think it does - why else do you think they keep sabotaging FASA's delivery schedules?

Well, yeah, but that's because there are no RL immortal elves. In the
Shadowrun world, things can be different. Maybe it was an IE who started
giving the birds bad press, whispered the right words in a few estate
owners' ears about the flying pests, and hey presto, when the Awakening
came, there were no elf-eating giant pigeons.

Layers of deciet, I like it. First you're told they don't exist, then you
find out they do and that they control everything, and every major event in
history was caused by them. Really they are dabblers, flat out keeping
themselves hidden. I'd also like to see dragons taken down a few notches. I
like dragons, but Shadowrun went WAY over the top with them.
