Yea, there's canon ruling in Awakenings. A voudoun can creat a govi
(possibly in the shape of the doll) to hold a link to the target (the
lock of hair you mentioned) and use it to kick a little ass. Check out
p. 128 in Awakenings for further details.

Someone mentioned to me last night about using voodoo dolls to
get back at a mage that screwed with his character..I was
wondering...any actual rules on this? Best thought I could come
up with is a type of ritual sorcery, using the doll and something
from the mage (lock of hair, etc) as a link for the ritual...of course,
it wouldn't be a true voodoo doll...you couldn't walk around all day
sticking pins into the doll to screw over the character...you could
only do it during the ritual...

As a House Rule, what about a sustaining focus for an Agony spell in the
shape of a rag doll that only caused the target the successes of pain
everytime a pin was stuck in? GMs should allow this, since it actually cuts
back on the continual effect of the sustained spell and enhances roleplaying.

Why use a doll? Just use the material link. Want to stick a pin in the
doll? Ritually cast a combat spell. WHat's the point of the doll?

Simply put, if you kill your target (or mortally wound) he feels pain
only once. But if you take the time to stick it to him (pun
unintended yet fitting), the agony and pain can be drawn out, possibly
driving the target to some form of insanity. :)

Its all about the power. You might be able to not only torment the target
but break them and eventually control...NOW you have a walking trigger that
you can pull anytime (preferably just after you've established that iron
clad alibi...should anyone come asking that is)

Lets keep in mind that the typical view of "voodoo dolls" is one from
movies, not from anthropology. In the actual voodoo religion, dolls are
used symbolically as part of rituals, usually by a person who uses the doll
to represent THEMSELVES (actually common to many occult practices). They
are NOT used in the "quick and dirty" or literally representative fashion
movies often represent them in. Even "black magic" uses would normally be
rather long processes, and not give literal results- the "pin stabbing"
might coincide with the victim catching a bad case of food poisoning that
same week, and the voodooist would claim success...
Does this matter to SR? Maybe not- its a fantasy game, after all. On
the other hand, it seems to me that voodoo dolls could safely be considered
a normal type of ritual material, and no more need be done.
