Subject: VR2 Cyberdeck construction rules

I'm not sure how many of you GM a 5 player group, 4 of whom deck, but here's
a question:

(VR2, p. 85, 88) The installation task for Active Memory and Storage Memory
describes time required as (Memory size / 100) and TN as Computer B/R
(Memory size / 100).

1. Assuming that standard decks (Renraku Kraftwerk) automatically
succeed at the outrageously high rolls required, how do do-it-yourself
deckers upgrade?
2. Assuming that a decker wishes to upgrade his deck's memory from 1000
mp to 2000 mp, is it as simple as adding another 1000 mp, or should he sell
his 1000 mp chip, buy a 2000 mp chip, then roll to install?

I know, I know, some of you will shout, "My god Alex, your deckers want 3000
mp of active memory and you're actually considering it?" On the other hand,
why should it be so difficult to accommodate them?

I think those figures are for the NEW memory being installed.

Well, they add it a little at a time, if you use the above
interpretation.

The second option. Pretty easy, no? Of course, its even easier to
install to 500MP chips- you'd have to decide at which point its getting
silly. Considering I've nevr failed to succesfully install memeory in a
computer, and have no real skill, I'd say its pretty easy today, and likely
to get easier.

Well, the upload requirements used to be a big factor in a decks
effectiveness in the stock SR2 rules, as I recall. But if you use
bandwidth rules, things tend to limit themselves. And I can see why you'd
want the memeory- smartframes REALLY chew up MP's.

IMO, I thought the rolls were for _making_ your own memory chips, not installing
them.
