After watching the last of the Mohicans on TV I have a questions
about one of the melle weapons used in it. I'd like to know whether
the weapon the father of Daniel Day Lewis used was a tomahawk or not, and
if its not a tomahawk, than what is it ?

No, it isn't a tomahawk. It is a riflebutt war club. It was a fairly
common weapon used by the Native Americans of the east and the plains.
The club is shaped like and sometimes made from the butt of a long-rifle.
On the topside of the bend is a three to four inch spear-type blade. It
is actually one of the deadliest of the Native American weapons.

If you wanted to translate this into SR terms it would have a +1 reach
and could be used as a club, an axe type weapon and a throwing weapon
(the latter would be rather clumsy and would require great skill).

A little more than $.02,
Will Cottrell
P.S. I've got a book here on how to make one so if you'd like, write me
and I'll send you the directions as best I can.

Was that the thing that looks a lot a representation of the butt-end of a rifle?
If so, it's supposed to be a representation of the butt-end of a rifle.
The way I heard it explained was that when Native Americans managed to get
hold of some of the invaders' guns, they found that maybe they couldn't get
bullets for them, but they made a great club if you swung them. So much so that
they took to making their own, solid-wood "rifles" to use as clubs. Apparently
this is a true fact and so that's why it was used in the film.
I heard this from my brother, who is both a film-nut and a gun-nut,
but he has been wrong before...
As far as I know, a tomahawk is a short hand-axe/hatchet. I don't
know what the name of the rifle-club is.
