As the rules go, when the owner of a weapon focus touches the weapon the
focus activates and when they aren't touching then the weapon deactivates.

Thing is, can you use the weapon as just a straight weapon without
activating the focus part of it? Need a bit of background. What happened was
I was playing an adept with his Katana as the weapon focus. I needed to
slice and dice some ganger who was annoying me but without tipping off
anyone who was awakened that it was a focus.

I said that I should be able to use the weapon on its own without activating
the focus part of it. The GM however said that it was automatic whenever you
touched it and the rules didn't really say much either.

Who'd you think was right, bearing in mind that as GM his decision was final
and we just went with it. This is more out of curiosity than anything else.

Thanks.

Humm, first simple action p105 SR3; activate focus. Simple actions require
concentration to carry out and I can't find any reference to weapon foca as
activating with a free (even unconsious) action (I'm looking at pg190,
Activation, here and can't see anything that describes Weapon Foci as being
different to the others).

So, no, the GM had no right to make you activate that focus :)>

Phil

That's it; get out of my castle!
