Okay, folks, well I've got a few weeks left before I have to go back to
Uni, so I"m making the most of them. I'm setting up a Shadowrun Webring.

All sites welcome (provided that they contain some original work, not
just lists of links to other sites); email me and I'll let you know when
the ring is functional so that you can all register your sites.

Please join!

Quick round of questions-

Where does the webring HTML code go on one's site? Entry page? Link page?
Does it matter where the HTML goes on one's site (that has multiple pages)?

In the form, I'd like the visitors from the ring to enter a certain page -
is this the same page you'd like the HTML code on? Or if I put the HTML
code on a different page, will that mess up the ring?

It depends - if your enitre site is SR-related, or just about (i.e. Like
yours, Thomas, and many others I've seen) it can go on the front page,
or wherever you'd like.

On pages like mine, where I have a lot of other stuff there as well as
the Shadowrun stuff, I want the HTML for the ring to go on an SR-related
page if possible. If it's on the front page, but links to your Shadowrun
stuff from there are *clearly* visible (again, take my page as an
example) then taht's fine too.

Best to have the HTML code on either the ring entry page *or* on your
main/front page, not tucked away elsewhere. Basically, put yourself in
the shoes of a browsing person unfamiliar with your site - will they be
able to find the webring control bar easily enough?

What happened? I swear I visited FASA's page yesterday and it had
joined and had links to both the Shadowrun Webring and the Earthdawn

They're still there. Main FASA page, first entry under What's New
says: "FASA Joins Earthdawn and Shadowrun Web Rings! (Posted September
15, 1997)."

The link takes you right to the Webrings.

That's what I saw on the 15th, but since then (including right now) I
don't see it.

I just now went to FASA's site and refreshed on their main page twice
to make sure. "FASA Joins Earthdawn and Shadowrun Web Rings! (Posted
September 15, 1997)" is still the first entry under What's New and the
link takes you right to a page with both webrings.

I just did an hour after I posted, and I too saw the links
again....but I swear they weren't there before (the newest Maximum
tech FAQ update wasn't either). Something funky going on....

(I also did multiple reloads recently to make sure. No change)

For the month and a half that I have had the internet connected, I have been
trying to see as much of the Shadowrun Webring as I can, and it isn't easy.
A lot of sites are gone, a lot are extremely dated. Each page lists a
different owner (or so it would seem). All you web veterans are probably
unaware of this because you bookmarked your favorite sites years ago, so I
just thought I'd let you know. I don't know what updating would entail, but
I imagine it would be a lot of work. It would be nice though.

The main Webring page asks people to email outdated sites to Lady Jestyr
(Or at least it did.). There's also a message board on the DR Forums where
you can report dead sites.

Feel free to email them to ME, for that matter. I can pass the addresses
along to Jestyr as need be.

Matter of fact, feel more than free - DO IT! Please!

Well, yeah... that's because each site *IS* owned by someone different.
Otherwise they'd all be on the same page :]

As for who owns the web ring itself, that'd be Lady Jestyr :]

I know Jes has had a LOT of stuff going on in her life, and hasn't had the
time she really needs to update the ring on a regular basis.

The SR Web Ring is one of the biggest rings out there, and unfortunately
between new sites popping up and sites going dead, it's a lot of work to
keep up with.

Maybe if anyone has the know how and the drive, Jes might be willing to
take on an apprentice to help her out (aka, do the hard shit :))

As the Webring maintainer, now's probably a good moment for an apology.

The simple truth is that right now, my personal life has been EXTREMELY
busy, as those who know me can confirm. I *am* working on beating the
Webring back into shape, but given how large it is, it's a long, slow process.

Yay, me.

The Shadowrun Webring has gone from having 356 sites in the ring and 68 in
the queue, to having 385 in the ring and 9 in the queue. Things are looking
up.

Now to fix all the broken points in the ring itself... *sigh*

Just thought some of you might care.
