As a byline to this discussion, let me point anyone interested in the topic
of spell-casting computers to _The Silicon Mage_ by Barbara Hambly; IMHO,
an excellent story, and a good picture of what happens when someone gets
a CCray-2 to cast spells... Note that this book has a precursor, _The Silent
Tower_.

And, from Woodsy:

>>>>>[For myself, I know only that Owl called, and my soul
answered.
I do not see that it would suit Owl's purposes to call cold metal to her
services, but I am only a walker on the earth. I pity the soul that gives
the keys to the threads of life to a machine, something not born to the
same experience that all Human Beings share. No good would come of such
an experiment; witness the fools who answer the call of Fly.]<<<<<

A more frightening possibility would be (plug your ears, everyone) a
Techno-totem...[Actually, it wasn't my idea, just another SHADOWRUNNER looking
on to my screen.] The more cyberware you have, the more magic... Now, as
ludicrous as that sounds, I DO know Game Masters who would be spiteful enough
to do that to their players... Truly a gut-wrenching thought, eh, everyone?

I hate to do this, but . . .

I no longer have enough free time to keep track of these lists,
so I'm unsubbing from them. <Plot-D, Shadowtk, Shadowrn> I will
continue to keep NERPS.

Anyway, Robert, could you remove Flicker and Candace Sweetwater
from the Cast List? Thanks . . .

Sorry, it *has* been fun, but I can't spend the time on-line to
keep up anymore. ;-( See y'all later,

I have to admit to being in a somewhat sick group...we're awfully
gun-laden. Even with the two airplane-AVMers kicked out, we're
well-armed. Of course, there is that new Shaman who couldn't use a
gun to save his life, but my mage (a rather long-running character,
but underplayed due to my usually being the GM) has a cornucopia of
weapons...all acquired over time using the rules in Shadowtech, BTW.
She even has Gamma-Anthrax air-timed mini grenades (they're actually
quite useless, I keep 3 around for possible revenge purposes). I do
like the fact that it's a reasonable pain to get APDS ammo with the
new rules - I was lucky enough to kill someone with an AR and a
couple of spare clips...

Oh yeah: How do you folks feel about killing guards and other
"incidentals"? In other words, they were just doing their job, but
you killed them.

As for killing "incidentals"....

Well if they fire first, they're meat. However, my mage has been
(ab)using the Grimoire rules to learn spells the karma-cheap route, and
some of the first I've learned were the (stun) spells. Nothing like
knocking out those sec-guards with a stun spell and just waltzing by
them. Of course if unconsciousness is a dead giveaway that something
happened, so how about putting them into suspended animation? Of course
there can still be problems, but the likelihood of detection can be a lot
lower.

I generally don't like to kill anyone unless I'm actually hired to. The
security guards are doing they're job, and part of it is the possibility
of coming into contact with lethal force, that's why they're armed. I'm
doing my job, and if we come into conflict I have no compunctions about
making sure that I'm the one who lives to see his next pay check. Still,
the best runs are the ones where I don't have to touch my gun, let alone
worry about trying to kill someone.

My primary character being a rigger with a Yellowjacket, he has very little
problem with wetwork in general. However, he tries to avoid killing innocent
bystanders.

One example contrary to this would be a "scare mission" Steve (our GM) had us
run against a Mafia don. Well, I had this Enfield AS-7 with explosive ammo,
y'see, and the don and his girlfriend were sort of in their bedroom. I kicked
open the door, he shot at me (and missed). Now, we weren't supposed to kill
this guy. So I let fly with the Enfield and managed to blast the girlfriend
pretty bad. (ie - She was really glad she had DocWagon, until two days
later, when somebody blew her away at point-blank range...haven't figured out
quite what that means yet.)

Now, my character generally tries to avoid doing such things, but he has no
problem with, say, destruction of property (he flushed an explosive maxigrenade)
or returning fire.

Just like it is in real life -- use your gun as a last resort, and if you do,
shoot to kill. Shooting to disable is pretty damn hard, and worse under
stress conditions. Better to make sure that you're the one who walks out of
there alive.

Depends on the character. The one I currently play simply believes, "If you
got hurt because you got in my way- Good." In his opinion, if the guards had
been sharper, more alert, quicker, better shots, or just plain tougher, they
wouldn't be dead. Gotta learn to take care of yourself.

He managed to blast the girlfriend pretty bad, yeah....the thing he didn't say
was that he was aiming for the wall above her head....
