From the FAQ: And the FAQ will be up on my web page by tonight. Promise
Promise. I'll announce when it is.
-----------------------------
What is ShadowRN?

ShadowRN is a discussion list for the role-playing game called
Shadowrun, which is published by FASA.

Shadowrun takes place in Seattle 61 years in the future.
Cybernetics, Virtual Reality, and Biotechnology are available
to the public. Furthermore, Magic exists and is controlled by
mages and shamans, and mythical beings once again roam the
land. Megacorporations, with the power of small nations, rule
the politics and hold the ultimate stranglehold on the
underclass. Surviving in the world of Shadowrun takes as much
courage as it does skill.

And perhaps just a little luck.

Comparing shadowrn to D&D is like comparing a Model 'T' Ford to the Space
Shuttle......

Ok, SR is a role playing game along the same lines as D&D, but set 61 years
in teh future. The setting is the same as in the video game, however...
Or at least similar...

And most of the guys on this list find the Video Game version a bit....
lame...

Yeah, but consider the kids reference points... He only know SR as a Video
game... He could be trying to compare it to Final Fantasy or Mario...

At least D&D is an RPG...

You still haven't answered my question. Is it a game like D&D. I don't
mean consistency, just how it it played.

Thank you,

You've answered one question that 50 letters haven't been able to do yet.
That Shadowrun is played along the same lines of D&D. My friends and me
might want to get in on Shadowrun sometime in the future, Because I'd
imagine that it would beat the hell out of D&D.

Hey, I thought my post answered your question...

Anyways, yeah... It's similar to D&D. You create a character, and one guy
runs the game for ya, while three or four or whatever of you play out a
group of characters.

It's a very good role-playing game... Check it out...

In the loosest sense of the word, yes.

It is a Role-Playing Game.

As for the rules, it is based totally on D6 dice.
(No D4, D8, D10, D12 or D20 die are used)

The only similarity between the systems is that people sit around with
character sheets rolling dice to determine results.

After that, the similarity ends.

Shadowrun doesn't even have hit points (in the D&D sense).

Hrmpf!
I think that's depending on wich side you started on. If you started out
with the SR roleplaying game I can understand that you might find it a
little bit lame, but if you (as I did) dindn't know SR the roleplaying ga=
me
existed until a year after finishing the SNES game (for example) you
would't say that.
The thing that got me turned on to Shadowrun was that game, and ever sinc=
e
I completed the game I've been dying to play Shadowrun2 (The first game
said it should come). I even bought it a couple of months back, just to
play it once more.
But thats just my two ören.

You're welcome. As for how it compares to AD&D (or **&* as it often gets
referred to around on the list, since it's by *gasp* T$R:), I wouldn't
know. I do know that that is what most of the people here would tell you,
however:)

Hmm... how it compares. Well, I can tell you that I've played more **&*
in my life than any other RPG or wargame. After I got SR though, I fell
in love with it instantly. It's the RPG for more *mature* gamers, though
I wonder about some of us (I'm not naming any names such as Bull).

If you're sick of the simplistic and basic concepts and adventures in
**&*, come over and try SR.

Also, T*R offers way too many ridiculously useless sourcebooks that they
make seem like we all must do with. With SR, just the main rulebook gives
you a wealth of info, not just game rule wise, but background wise as
well. That's one book vs player's handbook, gm's handbook, monstrous
compedium/book and a campaign setting! What more can I say?

I wouldn't call frozen pizza a real pizza either but sometimes you
like those things depite yourself. Or you could say game cart RPG's are
more like that substance Taco Bell calls meat, you know it's not the same
but you enjoy it anyway. What this is really trying to get across is _I_
liked it as far as consule RPG's go. (Sega is way better than Snes when
it comes to the real game interpretation). This reminds me of my science
fantasy game I want to run based off of Phantasy Star and numerous anime
flicks...

Come on, at least he knows the basics of what RPGs are, which is a hell
of a lot more than what I can say for nearly 100% of the people I come in

I guess you subscribed here because you thought there'd be talk about the
SR video game, right? :)
It comes up from time to time, but 99% of the time the discussions are
about the Shadowrun roleplaying game, which is somehat like D&D/AD&D (or
**&*, as you'll also see it spelled) but with different rules, set in a
different world, and published by a different company... (You'd be amazed
at the number of people I've run into who think all RPGs are AD&D game
worlds... sad, innit?)

Anyway, if you've played D&D and the SR video game, why not give "real"
Shadowrun a try?
